DENTON, Texas – Midwestern State took advantage of a pair Central Missouri sixth inning errors to plate the winning run in a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon in the Texas Woman's Tournament at Ryan High School's Tina Menke Field.
Kristen Stonecipher lined a one-out single to center field before advancing all the way to third on by Central Missouri third baseman Katie Bauer when MSU's
Jessica Rodriguez reached on the fielder's choice.
Stonecipher then scored when the Jennies' first baseman Whitney Sandberg muffed a throw from the shortstop allowing
Amanda Potysman to reach on UCM's second-straight error inning, but the Jennies recorded to throw out Rodriguez out at the plate for the final out of the inning.
The win pushed the Mustangs to 5-4 on the season, while Central Missouri dropped to 1-4.
The late run made a winner of sophomore pitcher
Katie Petersen, who improved to 2-2.
Petersen hurled three hitless innings while striking five in relief of Brittany Tanner.
Tanner allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits while striking out three in four innings.
The Mustangs jumped on Central Missouri starter Megan Leonard for two runs in the top of first keyed by a Stonecipher RBI single.
The Jennies fought back for single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before Stonecipher plated the winning run in the sixth.
Stonecipher accounted for two of MSU's four hits against Leonard, who fell to 1-1.
