ADA, Okla. - For the second time this season, Midwestern State showed the depth of its offense as it churned out 666 yards of offense to help the No. 14 Mustangs to a 49-14 win over East Central in front of the Tigers' Homecoming court Saturday night at Norris Field.
The Mustangs' assault included a 431-yard rushing performance led by true freshman
Marcus Mathis, who ran for 116 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns, and junior transfer
Steven Harper, who added 112 yards on five totes including runs of 46 and 45 yards.
The rushing output was the fourth most in school history, while the 666 yards of total was fifth most.
The Mustangs' six rushing scores which included two from Mathis, two from
Daniel Polk and one each from Harper and B.J. Mathis ties a school record.
Midwestern, which improved to 4-0, jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead as the Mustangs' scored on their first possession for the fourth-straight game when Harper burst 46 yards up the middle at the 8:17 mark of the opening quarter. It was sophomore signal caller
Justin Lightfoot who got his first career starts as Polk sat out the first series for missing a team meeting earlier in the week.
Polk took over the second possession and misfired on a screen pass to
Marcus Mathis that ended up in the hands of East Central's DeMarcus Young who returned the ball to the MSU 16-yard line.
ECU starting quarterback Marcus Johnson hit Justin Goolsby for a score on the next play to knot the game at 7-7. It was the first time in 17 games that MSU had allowed a touchdown in the first quarter dating back to Oct. 29, 2005 at Eastern New Mexico.
The Mustangs converted their next three drives for scores before East Central converted two costly personal foul penalties for a score to pull within 28-14 at the intermission.
MSU put the game away in the second half with three touchdowns, including an 89-yard burst from B.J. Mathis late in the fourth quarter. Mathis' run was the second longest in recorded history (1988) behind Phillip Boggs' 95-yard run at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Sep. 20, 2003.
Defensively, the Mustangs were paced by senior safety
Frank Brown, who recorded eight tackles, three sacks, forced a fumble and broke up a pass. In all, the MSU defense recorded nine sacks including three more from
Justin Foyt.
