SAN ANGELO, Texas - Midwestern State's
Daniel Polk ran for a season-high 130 yards and accounted for three touchdowns as he led the No. 13 Mustangs to a 44-16 win over Angelo State Saturday night at San Angelo Stadium.
The Mustangs, who improved to 5-0, are now set for a battle of Lone Star Conference undefeated teams next weekend against West Texas A&M, which also improved to 5-0 with a 38-3 trouncing of Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night in Canyon.
The Mustangs got out to a quick start as Polk connected with senior wideout
DelJuan Lee on a quick hitch, but Angelo State's Tarric Jones couldn't make the tackle allowing Lee to spring free for a 72-yard touchdown to give MSU a 7-0 less than a minute into the contest.
Angelo State answered with an eight-play, 62-yard drive featuring Daniel Thomas, who finished with a game-high 166 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries, but had to settle for a 19-yard field goal by Brad Holcomb to cut the advantage to 7-3.
The Mustangs went up 13-3 after Polk scored on a 2-yard run after MSU defensive end
Jarrell Warren forced ASU quarterback Justin Neiswander to fumble on the Rams' 15-yard line. Freshman safety
Ryan Craven fell on the ball to give the Mustangs possession before Polk scored three plays later.
The Midwestern offense extended the advantage to 20-3 by working a 13-play, 86-yard drive in 5:46 which was culminated by Polk's second touchdown of the half on a 6-yard run with 6:34 to go in the half.
Angelo State would answer on the opening drive of the second half when Thomas bolted for a 64-yard TD run to narrow Mustangs' lead to 20-10.
But the Mustangs would score two touchdowns in the span of nine seconds as
Joe Chatman scored from 2 and 1 yard out after MSU linebacker
Jacob Martin recovered a loose kickoff on the 1-yard line in between the scores as the Mustangs took a commanding 34-10 lead.
Chatman would add his third touchdown of the game and season early in the fourth quarter as the junior finished the night with 96 yards on 15 carries.
Lee recorded his second 100-yard receiving game of the season with 102 yards on four receptions as he moved into fifth place on MSU's all-time reception yard list.
Martin and Craven paced the Mustangs with eight tackles each.
The Mustangs recorded their third game of at least 500 total yards by finishing with 574 yards, including 368 rushing yards on 58 carries.
Junior reserve B.J. Mathis had 70 yards on 13 carries, while
Steven Harper added 31 yards on four totes and
Adrion Butler had 20 yards on three rushes.
Angelo State dropped to 1-4.
