Return of the bats: No. 21 MSU sweeps No. 16 Abilene Christian

ABILENE, Texas – Sarah Huddleston blasted a three-run home run to lead the Midwestern State University Mustangs to a 6-1 over No. 16 Abilene Christian in Game 1 Wednesday afternoon at Wells Field.

The No. 21 Mustangs used a pair of ACU errors to put up an eight-spot in the third inning of Game 2 and coast to an 11-5 non-divisional win.

MSU, now 32-8 on the season, returns to the Sunrise Optimist on Saturday at noon for a double dip with another LSC South foe, Angelo State.

Huddleston's blast over the center field fence followed Kelli Shaw's two-run single to give the Mustangs a 5-0 lead. Kristen Stonecipher added a run-scoring double in the seventh inning, but that was more than enough support for starter Brittany Willson.

Willson allowed one earned run on five hits, but struggled with her command by walking three. The senior right hander struck out nine to improve to 20-5 on the season.

The Mustangs scratched for 14 hits in Game 2, but a pair of ACU errors in the third inning allowed MSU to break open a game it trailed 3-0.

MSU found various ways to score, but scored single runs on four singles, a hit batsman, a walk and the two errors.

The Mustangs added three more runs in the seventh inning and Willson came on to pitch the final three innings in relief of starter Ashley Kuchenski to earn her third save of the season.

Kuchenski, who improved to 13-3 on the season, allowed three earned runs in four innings of work. She struck out four and walked one.

Stonecipher and Allison Tidwell led a 22-hit MSU barrage over the two games with three hits each. Stoncipher drove in three runs and scored three runs.

Huddleston finished the day with three hits, driving in four runs and scoring two more, including her fourth home run of the season.
