SAN ANTONIO – The Midwestern State University softball team split games on the second day of the St. Mary's Classic at the San Antonio ISD Triplex.  MSU defeated Incarnate Word 11-6 in 11 innings in the first game, then suffered a 5-2 defeat to St. Edward's in the second contest.
Against UIW, Midwestern broke open the game in the 11th when
Kelli Shaw's double drove in
Jessica Rodriguez to break a 6-all tie.
Chantelle Lee whacked a two-RBI single later in the inning to plate Shaw and
Sarah Huddleston.  Then
Allison Tidwell followed with a triple to right scoring Stephanie Warlaw and Lee for a five-run 11th.
Lee, who finished with five runs batted in, also bashed the first Mustang homer of the season, a three-run shot in the top of the seventh that gave MSU a brief lead.
Senior
Brittany Willson pitched all 11 innings for MSU, striking out 11 and allowing 10 hits with six runs, three earned.
Starting the second game an hour after the first ended, MSU fell behind 2-0 to the Hilltoppers, only to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Tidwell and
Kristen Stonecipher.
But in the top of the sixth, a throwing error allowed SEU's Danielle Mangrum score from second.  Two outs later Rebecca Ray belted a homer for a 4-2 advantage.  SEU added an insurance run off an error in the seventh as well.
Ashley Kuchenski went the distance in the loss for MSU, posting two strikeouts and four walks.
Midwestern State, now 2-1 on the season, concludes the classic on Saturday with an 11:15 a.m. game with Southern Arkansas and a 6 p.m. contest with host St. Mary's.
