WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State University Mustangs picked up their sixth and seventh straight wins on the season as they swept a softball doubleheader from the West Texas A&M University Lady Buffs Tuesday afternoon 15-1 and 2-1 at the Sunrise Optimist Complex.
MSU (12-3) got a pair of home runs from third baseman
Kristen Stonecipher. Her second homer of the day was the winner in game two, as she belted a two-run shot off the top of the fence in left center in the bottom of the fifth to give MSU the lead.
Stonecipher went 2-for-6 on the day with the two homers and five runs batted in. First baseman
Jessica Rodriguez went 4-for-6 with 3 RBI, as did shortstop
Kelli Shaw.
Senior pitcher
Brittany Willson hurled all but two of the 12 innings played. She collected 13 strikeouts in 10 innings, allowing only one run and two walks while scattering eight hits.
Ashley Kuchenski closed game one allowing two hits with a strikeout and walk.
Midwestern chalked up a pair of six run innings in game one, as West Texas A&M (5-10) collected three errors in the first inning with a pair of hits for six tallies.
The 15 runs scored by MSU tied the school record for runs in a game and set a recordfor largest margin of victory (14). MSU previously scored 15 runs in a 15-6 win at East Central on March 17, 2004.
The second game saw WT jump out to a 1-0 advantage when WT's Brooke Guidry singled to left to score Michelle Teller.
Kourtney Hodgins made it stick until the fifth when she walked
Allison Tidwell with two out. Stonecipher took a ball from Hodgins before sending the next pitch out of the yard.
MSU will be in action again on Friday with a pair of games in the Lone Star Conference First Pitch Tournament at the Texas Star Complex in Irving. MSU meets Angelo State at noon, then takes on Texas Woman's at 4 p.m.
