Mustangs survive battle with Oklahoma Christian, remain unbeaten with 2-1 victory

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — No. 12-ranked Midwestern State defeated Oklahoma Christian 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Stang Park. Madison Brinkley broke a 1-1 tie in the 80th minute, finishing Jimena Rodriguez's pass with a curling shot from just inside the box into the top right corner.

The Mustangs extend their home unbeaten streak to 26 games. MSU only allowed five shots on goal and has not allowed an opponent more than five shots on goal in their last 30 games.

Midwestern State (10-0-1, 6-0-1) generated early pressure with a Lexi Gonzales shot in the fifth minute, a corner shortly thereafter, and a Leeci Snyder attempt in the eighth minute. The Eagles were shown two yellow cards in the seventh and ninth minute. Oklahoma Christian (6-3-0, 3-3-0) came back with Jordan Tanges shooting wide in the 10th minute, and Rylan McIntyre putting a shot on frame in the 12th minute that Lauren Short saved. The teams traded chances through the middle of the half, with Izzy Amphlett and Ashlynn Knight sending attempts high for the Mustangs while Short also stopped Jaycie Daggs in the 25th minute. The Eagles applied late pressure with three corners and two Caid Jefferson shots between in the latter stages of the first half, but MSU kept the match scoreless through halftime.

The Mustangs pressed early in the second half with corners in the 46th and 49th minutes. McKynzi Hailey finished the opening goal in the 50th minute by volleying from inside the six-yard box after the ball was headed toward goal. The Mustangs continued to create chances through shots from Amphlett, Sloane Sullivan and Allie Cifuentes, but OC tied it in the 74th minute when Caid Jefferson scored off an assist from Jenna Munson. The Eagles kept pushing with three shots and two corner kicks over the next four minutes, including a Jenna Munson attempt saved by Short. Brinkley put MSU back ahead in the 80th minute, taking a pass from Rodriguez on the left wing, touching into the box and curling a shot into the top right corner for the 2-1 final.
