AUSTIN, Texas – Lexi Gonzales and Ashlynn Knight scored first-half goals, and Lauren Short made three saves as Midwestern State remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over St. Edward's at Lewis-Chen Family Field on Sunday morning.
The game was originally scheduled to be played Saturday afternoon but was postponed due to inclement weather.
Midwestern State is off to the best start in program history with an 11-0-1 record and is 7-0-1 in the Lone Star Conference. St. Edward's falls to 1-7-3 overall and 1-3-2 in conference play.
Gonzales scored her team-leading sixth goal of the year with a right-footed half volley in the third minute of the match. Gonzales goal was set up by Sloane Sullivan, who finished the game with two assists and now leads the Mustangs with five assists this season.
Sullivan set up Knight for a header in the 32nd minute, and the native of Wichita Falls scored her third goal of the season for the Mustangs.
Short turned in her ninth clean sheet of the season, and she has one combined shutout for Midwestern State, which has outscored opponents this season 30-2.
Midwestern State outshot the Hilltoppers, 16-8, and only allowed three shots on goal. The Mustangs have not allowed an opponent more than five shots on goal in their last 31 matches.
Midwestern State is on the road Wednesday night to face West Texas A&M. Kickoff at The Pitch in Canyon, Texas, is scheduled for 7 p.m.
