SAN ANTONIO – Midwestern State enters the final round of the The Dewsweeper Invitational on Tuesday morning with a one-stroke lead over Arkansas Tech and Cameron at the top of the leaderboard. The Mustangs are 4-under 572 through the first two rounds of the 54-hole event at TPC - San Antonio Canyons Course.
Anniston McIlwain is in a three-way tie for second place on the individual leaderboard at 4-under 140, trailing Luke Cote of Southern Arkansas by seven strokes.
McIlwain was instrumental in the Mustangs getting off to a strong start at the Pete Dye-designed course. The junior from Bulverde, Texas, started his first round at the par-5 515-yard 12th hole and carded his first of six birdies. McIlwain birdied three of four holes to get to 6-under through his first 11 holes. He finished out the round with six pars and his only bogey. He shot 5-under 67 in his first round of the new season.
McIlwain's second round started with a bogey, but he eagled the 575-yard par-5 15th hole and finished the day with two more birdies. McIwain was even-par in the second round until a bogey on his final hole put him at 1-over 73.
Collin Moody, a sophomore from Bridgeport, Texas, is in an eight-way tie for 13th place at even-par through the first 36 holes. Moody had three consecutive birdies on holes No. 6 – No. 8 — a par-5, a par-4 and a par-3. Moody had back-to-back birdies at No. 11 and No. 12 and finished the first round at 1-under 71. Moody started the second round with a birdie at the 335-yard par-4 17th hole. He birdied No. 6 and No. 12 again during the afternoon session and shot 1-over 73.
Ryan Griff and Jaxon Donaldson are in a six-way tie for 21st place at 1-over 145.
Griff had four birdies through 36 holes. He birdied the 354-yard par-4 No. 1 hole and the 550-yard par 5 No. 2 hole in both rounds on Monday. After shooting 3-over 75 in the first round on Monday, Griff shot a bogey-free 2-under 70 in the second round. The junior from Bulverde, Texas, leads the field with 28 pars through 36 holes.
Donaldson birdied two of his first three holes to start the day and added one more birdie on his way to a 2-over 74 in the first round. The junior from Wimberley, Texas, reeled off six consecutive pars to begin his second round. He had four birdies during the afternoon session and shot 1-under 71.
Carter Ray is in a four-way tie for 27th place in the 60-player field at 2-over 146. Ray's day began with a birdie at No. 18, a 441-yard par-4. The junior from Walters, Oklahoma, was 2-under through his first 10 holes, but he bogeyed three of the next four holes to finish his first round at 1-over 73. Ray had four birdies and was 1-over 73 in his second round.
Midwestern State was 10 strokes better than the field on the par-4s, shooting 1-under. Arkansas Tech, which was 15-under on the par-5s, was 11-over on par-4s. Midwestern State shot 3-under on the par-5s.
Oklahoma Christian is the only other team in the 12-team field in red numbers and is in fourth place at 1-under 575 through 36 holes.
