WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State defeated Eastern New Mexico 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at Stang Park. The Mustangs scored five times before halftime and finished with a 36-2 shot advantage.
Midwestern State (6-0-0) extended its home unbeaten streak to 24 games, and the Mustangs have held their last 25 opponents to five shots or fewer on goal. MSU has not conceded a goal this season and has a plus-21 goal differential through its first six matches.
Morgan Countryman put MSU in front 9 seconds in, intercepting the kickoff and dribbling through the center channel before scoring with her right foot. It was the fourth fastest shot in the history of NCAA Division II women's soccer.
The Mustangs kept pressing with shots from Leeci Snyder, Madison Brinkley and Sophie Ferro, plus corner kicks at 7:18 and 10:49, before Sloane Sullivan's saved shot at 15:40 led to Lexi Gonzales converting the rebound at 15:41 for a 2-0 lead.
Sullivan finished a Snyder cross at 17:48 to make it 3-0, while Lauren Short preserved the margin with saves on ENMU (1-3-1) shots by Raylene Carillo and Keira Gamboa. Ashlynn Knight added two late goals, scoring off assists from Izzy Amphlett and Ashlyn Novotny at 35:35 and from Binky Mendez and Novotny at 40:03, and the Maroon & Gold carried a 5-0 lead into halftime.
MSU opened the second half with five shots and two corner kicks before Brinkley scored at 54:55 off assists from Sullivan and Snyder to make it 6-0.
After the Greyhounds earned a corner at 57:43, the Mustangs continued forward with shots from Marlene Myrvold, Brinkley and Gonzales, and Snyder scored at 60:35 off Myrvold's assist for a 7-0 lead.
MSU added chances from Ella Adams, Taryn Sueltz and Jimena Rodriguez, then Mendez scored at 75:51 with assists from Knight and Rodriguez to move the score to 8-0.
The Mustangs kept creating late with five shots after the 80:01 corner, including Knight's strike off the woodwork at 87:43 and Novotny's saved attempt at 89:36, and closed out the 8-0 win.
