Mustangs meet St. Mary's in quarterfinals of LSC Men's Tennis Championship

ARLINGTON, Texas – Midwestern State, No. 25 in the ITA Collegiate Rankings, is the No. 4 seed in the 2026 Lone Star Conference Men's Tennis Championship and faces No. 5 seed St. Mary's in the quarterfinals at Arlington Tennis Center at noon on Thursday.

Midwestern State (13-6, 5-3) extended its winning streak to three duals with a 4-0 win at St. Mary's in the regular season finale on Sunday.

Germano Setti, No. 18 in the latest ITA singles rankings, is 12-4 at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs this season and finished with a 5-2 record against conference opponents. His two losses in LSC play came against No. 4-ranked Kelly Giese of Lubbock Christian and No. 7-ranked Lukas Janousek of Cameron.

Setti and Matthew Earle are 15-2 at No. 2 doubles this season with a 6-1 record in conference duals, and the duo is 2-1 against nationally ranked opponents. In the latest ITA Collegiate Rankings, Setti and Earle are No. 32 in NCAA Division II.

Bruno Sanchez and Juan David Duque are ranked No. 10 in doubles and have a seven-match winning streak, boasting a 7-1 record in conference play and finishing the regular season with a 10-5 record at No. 1 doubles.

Sanchez has a four-match winning streak in singles and won seven of his last eight matches at No. 2 singles. The junior from Spain is 13-5 this spring with a 7-1 conference record.

Duque played No. 3 singles in six of the last eight duals for the Mustangs and closed the regular season with a three-match winning streak. Duque is 11-6 this season with a 4-4 record at No. 3 singles. He is 6-1 when playing No. 4 singles. The senior from Colombia was 4-2 against LSC opponents.

Jose Marquez also closed the season with three consecutive victories, losing a total of five games in that span. The senior from Oaxaca, Mexico, was 8-3 at No. 4 singles and won five of his eight matches at No. 3 singles. He defeated six of the eight players he faced from the LSC.

Midwestern State is 7-7 at No. 5 singles with Earle occupying the position 10 times this season and posting a 5-5 record. The senior from Ireland is 2-2 in LSC duals and 5-6 overall this season.

Four different players saw time at No. 6 singles during the regular season, and the Mustangs were 9-8. Tomas Leguizamon, a freshman from Colombia, clinched the victory at St. Mary's with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Aaron Ben Anton at No. 6 singles in the regular season finale. Leguizamon finished the season with a 6-5 record overall and was 4-2 in his LSC appearances.

Midwestern State was 66-36 (.647) in singles matches this season and won the doubles point in 12 of 19 duals this season, posting a 36-19 record in doubles.

With a victory over the Rattlers on Thursday, the Mustangs would advance to the semifinals and get a rematch with Lubbock Christian, which earned a 5-2 victory at MSU Tennis Center in the conference opener on April 3. 

Sanchez defeated Pablo Segura at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1, and Marquez was a 7-5, 6-2 winner over Andres De Los Rios at No. 4 singles for MSU, which would face the Chaparrals on Friday at 1 p.m.

Cameron and UT Tyler meet in the other semifinal dual on Friday. The championship match is scheduled to be played on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Midwestern State reached the finals in three of the last four seasons and is seeking its first postseason conference tournament championship since lifting the trophy in 2019. MSU is a five-time conference champion.
