WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State closed out the regular season on Saturday afternoon and celebrated Senior Day after sashaying its way past Sul Ross State at MSU Tennis Center, 7-0. The Mustangs finished the season with a 7-0 record at home.
No. 35-ranked Midwestern State is 15-6 with a 7-2 conference record. Sul Ross State finishes its season 0-14 with an 0-10 record in the Lone Star Conference.
The Mustangs led 1-0 just 20 minutes into the dual match.
Hattie Berend and
Alessia Dolce won in a walkover at No. 3 doubles.
Emilia Gyorgy and
Selin Sepken were through at No. 2 doubles in 16 minutes, defeating Aysiah Wiser and Clarissa DeLeon, 6-0. Just a few minutes later,
Jasmine Crain and
Camila Garcia walked off the court with a 6-1 victory over Emily Scott and Madalyn Marquez at No. 1 doubles.
Mala Krzanic-Sullivan was gifted a walkover at No. 6 singles, and the rest of the Mustangs completed the sweep of the Lobos. Midwestern State won nine of the 10 sets played in singles at love.
Sepken, who was the only senior honored in a post-match ceremony, posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Wiser at No. 1 singles in less than a half hour. Sepken has a four-match winning streak, improving to 9-1 in conference duals and 17-2 overall this season.
Gyorgy won her match at No. 2 singles in 32 minutes, defeating DeLeon, 6-0, 6-0, earning her 13th win in her last 15 starts. The freshman from Hungary is 8-2 against conference opponents and 16-6 overall this season.
Dolce has an eight-match winning streak without dropping a set after cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Scott at No. 3 singles. The sophomore from Italy is 8-2 in conference duals with a 14-6 record overall. Dolce is 8-0 in the friendly surroundings at MSU Tennis Center.
Crain won her fourth consecutive singles match and improved to 8-2 in LSC duals with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Marquez at No. 4 singles. Crain is 12-9 overall this season but won seven of her last eight singles matches.
Freshman
Ana Maria Podrug made her second appearance for the Mustangs and got little resistance from her opponent at No. 5 singles, coasting to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Josabeth Hernandez.
The tennis gets much more challenging next week, when the Mustangs compete in the Lone Star Conference Tournament at Arlington Tennis Center beginning on April 30.
