PLANO, Texas – No. 2-seed Midwestern State faced fifth-seeded Cameron in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Women's Tennis Championship. Due to inclement weather, the match was moved indoors at Life Time. The Mustangs acclimated themselves nicely and defeated the Aggies for the second time this season. MSU will appear in the final for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2019.
Midwestern State lost the semifinal dual each of the last two years but went on to play in the NCAA Division II National Semifinals.
This year, the Mustangs defeated their Red River rivals, 4-0, and will play top-seeded UT Tyler for the conference title on Saturday as the tournament returns to Arlington Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m.
Emilia Gyorgy clinched the dual-match victory over Cameron by defeating Adel Ismagulova at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3. The freshman from Hungary has won 14 of her last 16 singles matches and is 17-6 in singles this spring.
Gyorgy and
Selin Sepken secured the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 6-4 victory over Ismagulova and Isabella Quintero at No. 2 doubles. The No. 10 pairing in the ITA Collegiate Rankings won their eighth consecutive match and improved their record this season to 17-6.
Hattie Berend and
Alessia Dolce improved their record at No. 3 doubles to 12-2 with a 6-3 triumph against Alexa Garcia and Daniela Maldonado to start the day. Garcia and Maldonado won the regular season matchup at Streich-Henry Tennis Complex on April 17.
Dolce won her ninth consecutive singles match and was the first singles player off the court as she handled Quintero in routine fashion at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Dolce has won 18 straight sets and is 15-6 this season.
No. 10-ranked Sepken breezed to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Jenna Goessel for her fifth straight win, and the LSC Women's Singles Player of the Year improved to 17-2 at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State is seeking its sixth conference title and its first since winning its third straight championship in 2019.
