Midwestern State sweeps WNMU without dropping a set

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State won its third consecutive dual match and remained undefeated at home with a 7-0 victory over Western New Mexico on Friday afternoon at MSU Tennis Center.

Midwestern State swept the three doubles matches and did not drop a set in six singles matches, improving its record to 15-6 overall and 5-2 against Lone Star Conference opponents. The Mustangs are 7-0 on their home courts this season.

Reigning LSC Doubles Team of the Week — Selin Sepken and Emilia Gyorgy — clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 triumph over Eva Guta and Xaviera Melgar.  Sepken and Gyorgy have won six straight matches at No. 2 doubles and improved to 15-6 for the season with a 6-3 record against LSC foes.

Hattie Berend and Alessia Dolce improved to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in conference matches with a 6-2 win over Lucia Carmena and Sofija Krstic at No. 3 doubles. The tandem remained perfect at MSU Tennis Center with a 5-0 record.

Camila Garcia and Jasmine Crain improved to 4-2 at No. 1 doubles with a 6-3 triumph over Josefina Bailetti and Nikoletta Pytel. Garcia and Crain are 18-3 overall with a 6-3 record in the LSC.

Sepken, ranked No. 8 in singles, annihilated Nikoletta Patel at No. 1 singles in less than an hour, 6-1, 6-0. Sepken is 16-2 this season with eight wins in nine conference matches for the Mustangs.

Garcia extended her winning streak in singles to 12 matches with a routine 6-0, 6-2 win over Eva Guta. Garcia is 18-1 at No. 3 singles and 9-0 against conference foes this spring. The sophomore from Colombia has won 13 consecutive sets.

Dolce has a seven-match winning streak without dropping a set at No. 4 singles after waylaying Lucia Carmena, 6-1, 6-1. The sophomore from Italy is 7-2 in conference duals with a 13-6 record overall. Dolce is 7-0 in the comfortable environment at MSU Tennis Center.

Gyorgy won for the 12th time in 14 singles matches with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Josefina Bailetti at No. 2 singles. The freshman from Hungary is 7-2 against conference opponents and 15-6 overall this season.

Crain took care of business with a no-nonsense 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Melgar at No. 5 singles. Crain is 7-2 in conference duals after winning her third consecutive singles match, and she is 9-4 in the No. 5 position this season.

Berend improved to 6-3 in conference duals with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Sofija Krstic at No. 6 singles. The Wichita Falls native is 5-1 at home with an 8-7 record overall this season.

The Mustangs return to MSU Tennis Center on Saturday morning for a dual match with Sul Ross State beginning at 10 a.m.
