Softball Falls In Pair of Tight Games Against The Dustdevils, 3-2 (8 Inn) and 3-2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (6-34, 4-26 LSC) faced Texas A&M International (12-31, 8-22 LSC) in a doubleheader at Mustangs Park, narrowly falling in both games by a score of 3–2.

GAME 1: TAMIU 3, MSU 2 (8 Inn.)

In the first game, the Mustangs managed to collect eight hits and took a brief lead, scoring two runs in the third inning. Texas A&M International opened the scoring in the first inning when Austyn Marriage crossed home plate on a wild pitch, giving the Dustdevils an early 1–0 lead. Midwestern State responded in the third inning as Mia Sanchez hit an infield single, followed by Myka Riley's single. After a sacrifice bunt by Hayeli Acosta moved the runners into scoring position, Tatum Waller's single to right field drove in both Sanchez and Riley, putting the Mustangs ahead 2–1.

However, Texas A&M International tied the game in the fourth inning when Christen Mendez, a pinch runner for Queenandra Dunn, scored on an RBI single by Isabella Perez. The game remained tied until the eighth inning, when Victoria Espinoza hit a solo home run to left center, securing a late lead for the Dustdevils. Despite a strong effort, the Mustangs could not respond in the bottom of the inning, concluding the game with a final score of 3–2.

Key performances included Kayleigh Bowers, who pitched a complete game allowing six hits and three runs over 8 innings. Waller stood out with two hits and two RBIs, while Sydnie Rios reached base three times with two hits, a walk, and a stolen base. Sanchez also contributed by scoring a run and stealing a base.

GAME 2: TAMIU 3, MSU 2

In the second game of the doubleheader, Midwestern State again fell to Texas A&M International with a final score of 3–2. The Mustangs managed to tie the game in the sixth inning with a two-run effort. TAMIU took the lead in the fourth inning when Victoria Espinoza doubled to right field, allowing Queenandra Dunn to score from first base.

Midwestern State fought back in the sixth inning as Myka Riley walked, followed by a double from Hayeli Acosta that drove Riley in. Chipper Mayorga then singled to left field, scoring Acosta and tying the game at 2-2. However, TAMIU fought back in the seventh inning, regaining the lead with a single from Sessy Moreno, bringing in Cihara Wessling from third.

Despite a late push from MSU, highlighted by a triple from Sydnie Rios, the inning ended without any further runs. The game concluded with a final score of 3–2 in favor of Texas A&M International.

In this matchup, Hayeli Acosta contributed with a hit, a run, and an RBI, along with a double. Sydnie Rios had two hits and a triple, while Chipper Mayorga recorded an RBI. Audrey Sierra delivered a solid performance on the mound, pitching 6 innings and allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out 1. Isabela Cornell added a scoreless inning of relief, and Shyanne Florence faced two batters in the final inning.

Looking ahead, MSU will host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Sunday, April 19, at Mustangs Park in Wichita Falls, Texas, with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. CT.
