MSU hosts Dustdevils under the lights; Javelinas visit for Alumni Day

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State returns home this week to face Texas A&M International in a doubleheader on Friday starting at 5 p.m., and Texas A&M-Kingsville visits the Mustangs on Sunday for a twin bill that gets underway at 1 p.m.

Midwestern State (6-32, 4-24) split a doubleheader at UT Dallas last Saturday. The Mustangs won the first game, 6-1, and the Comets salvaged a split with a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.

Hayeli Acosta had two hits, including a two-run double in the win at UTD, and Stormy Daniel was 2-for-3 with a double and a two-run homer, scoring twice in the victory. Mia Sanchez was also 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Mustangs, who pounded out eight hits.

Kayleigh Bowers was the winning pitcher, working seven innings without allowing an earned run while allowing just four hits and recording four strikeouts. Bowers threw her seventh complete game of the season. The junior from Phoenix lowered her ERA to a team-best 3.90.

UT Dallas scored three runs on three hits in the second inning to win the nightcap as both teams finished with five hits in the contest.  Chipper Mayorga, Sydnie Rios and Mayorga all had a stolen base for the Mustangs, who left nine runners stranded and finished the 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

The Mustangs have successfully stolen 47 bases on 60 attempts this season. Daniel is 11-for-12 on stolen base attempts, and Rios is 5-for-5. Mayorga is 5-for-7 this season.

Mayorga is tied for the team lead with 17 RBIs, and the freshman second baseman from San Antonio leads the team with 44 total bases this season. She is second on the team with six doubles and is hitting .333 for the season (38-for-114), trailing only Erikha Ibarra Subia on the Mustangs roster.

Outfielder Ibarra Subia has been out of action since March 22 after suffering an injury attempting to make a diving catch against West Texas A&M. The junior from Albuquerque is hitting .338 and leads the team with a .454 on-base percentage.

Madison Stewart has missed the last month of the season with an injury sustained at Lubbock Christian on March 14. The senior catcher from Lubbock has a .302 batting average with 10 RBIs and has thrown out 7-of-18 base runners attempting to steal.

Acosta, who started the season at shortstop, has taken over behind the plate and proven to be a good defensive catcher, but her batting average has climbed to .280 since taking on the catcher's duties. The senior from Dallas has at least one hit in nine of her last 10 games with four multi-hit games over that span, during which she has hit .406 for the Mustangs.

Myka Riley, a freshman from Irving, Texas, has also heated up with at least one hit in seven of the last 10 games and is hitting .300 during that stretch.

Daniel has been getting regular playing time at shortstop, and she has a three-game hitting streak entering the homestand. Daniel is hitting .352 over her last nine games, and four of her seven RBIs this season have come during this stretch.

Paige Scanlin leads the Mustangs with three home runs this season. Daniel, Tatum Waller and Marisela Landa each have one homer for the Mustangs this season.

Landa has 17 RBIs and leads the team with seven doubles. Waller has 14 RBIs, and Scanlin has driven home 13 runs this season.

The Midwestern State pitching staff has a 4.73 ERA this season and opponents are hitting .325 against the Mustangs, who are giving up six runs a game while scoring just 2.7 runs per outing. Only 160 of the 228 runs allowed this season are earned runs.

TEXAS A&M INTERNATIONAL (10-31, 6-22)

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Dustdevils, 14-8, and the Mustangs are 7-1 when hosting TAMIU, which swept MSU in a doubleheader at Dustdevil Softball Field last season. The Mustangs swept a three-game series at home two years ago, outscoring TAMIU in the three games, 16-3.

The Dustdevils are 5-9 on the road this season and arrive in Wichita Falls with a four-game losing streak as St. Mary's and St. Edward's both swept TAMIU in Laredo last week.

Texas A&M International is hit .232 as a team and is scoring 3.2 runs per game this season.
Austyn Marriage is the leading hitter for the Dustdevils with a .280 batting average. The freshman from Bloomington, Indiana, has four home runs, three doubles and eight RBIs.

Victoria Espinoza leads the team with six home runs, seven doubles and 22 RBIs.  Dunn Queenandra has 20 RBIs and three home runs. Miley Vinton has four home runs and 17 RBIs for the Dustdevils, who have hit 22 homers as a team.

Texas A&M International has a team ERA of 4.99, led by Kylie Goad and Naveah Herrera. Goad has thrown 11 complete games with 63 strikeouts and 39 walks over 111 innings. Herrera has thrown four complete games with one shutout in 17 starts for the Dustdevils.

TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE (26-12, 21-7)

The all-time series between Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Kingsville is tied, 26-26, but the Javelinas have won 19 of the 21 games against MSU, including the two games played in Kingsville last season. Midwestern State won two of the three games played against TAMUK at Mustangs Park two years ago. The Javelinas are 8-13 all-time when visiting Midwestern State.

Texas A&M-Kingsville is visiting Lubbock Christian before facing the Mustangs. The Javelinas are 9-3 on the road this season.

St. Mary's ended the Javelinas' 14-game winning streak with an 11-8 victory in the second game of a doubleheader at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field on Sunday.

Victoria Vargas leads the offense and is fifth in the LSC with a .411 batting average. Dakota Martinez has hit nine home runs this season and has a team-leading 40 RBIs with a .379 batting average for the Javelinas, who are hitting .326 as a team with 33 home runs this season.
