RICHARDSON, Texas — Midwestern State (6-32, 4-24 LSC) had a mixed doubleheader against the University of Texas at Dallas (12-24, 9-18 LSC) at UTD Softball Field, with a decisive 6–1 victory in the first game followed by a 3-0 defeat in the second.
In the first game, the Mustangs' offensive highlight came from a four-run fifth inning that propelled them to the win. UTD initially took a 1–0 lead in the fourth inning with an unearned run scored by Sarah Olenick; however, the Mustangs responded strongly in the fifth.
Stormy Daniel doubled and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by
Paige Scanlin.
Sydnie Rios followed with a bunt single, eventually scoring on a bunt single by
Mia Sanchez.
Hayeli Acosta then doubled, bringing in two more runs, pushing MSU ahead 4–1 by the end of the fifth inning.
The Maroon & Gold extended their lead in the sixth inning as
Marisela Landa singled, followed by Daniel hitting a two-run homer down the left field line, increasing the lead to 6–1. The defense held the Comets scoreless in their final at-bats, sealing the win.
Kayleigh Bowers delivered a standout performance, pitching a complete game while allowing only four hits and one unearned run, striking out four batters. Despite giving up three walks, Bowers maintained control, throwing 72 strikes out of 119 pitches, improving her season record to 2-14. Daniel showcased her power with a home run and two RBIs, while Sanchez added two hits and one RBI, and Acosta contributed with two hits and two RBIs.
In the second game, early scoring determined the outcome. The Comets took a decisive lead in the bottom of the second inning, with Blair Collier doubling down the left field line to bring home two runs, followed by Rachel Wallace's sacrifice fly that added another, giving the home team a 3-0 lead. This score held throughout the game as both teams remained scoreless in the remaining innings.
Midwestern State managed five hits and stole four bases but could not convert any of their opportunities into runs.
Stormy Daniel showcased her speed by stealing two bases, while
Hayeli Acosta contributed with a hit and a walk, and
Mia Sanchez added another hit to her performance.
Audrey Sierra delivered a strong relief performance in the second game, pitching 4 innings without allowing a run and conceding only two hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
Isabela Cornell started the game, pitching two innings and giving up three earned runs on three hits, along with two walks and a hit batter.
Looking ahead, the Mustangs will face Texas A&M International on Friday, April 17, at 5 p.m. CT at Mustangs Park in Wichita Falls, Texas.
