AUSTIN, Texas -- Midwestern State (4-18, 2-12) routed St. Edward's (8-15, 5-7) in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field, 11-3, but lost the nightcap in a nine-inning heart breaker, 4-3.
GAME 1: MIDWESTERN STATE 11, ST. EDWARD'S 3 (5 INNINGS)
Marisela Landa was 3-for-3 with five RBIs as Midwestern State pounded out 12 hits, scoring in all but one inning en route its second eight-run rule victory this season. Chipper Mayorga was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Landa delivered a two-out double with the bases loaded in the first inning, and the Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
Midwestern State extended its lead with a run in the third inning. Madison Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Tatum Waller, and the Mustangs scored four runs on their first five hits of the game.
After the Hilltoppers scored three runs on three hits in the third inning, the Mustangs answered with a six-run frame in the fourth inning.
Paige Scanlin led off the inning with a single, and Erikah Ibarra-Subia worked a one-out walk. Waller drove in two runs with a base hit to left field. Chipper Mayorga's single drove in Hayeli Acosta and allowed Waller to reach third base.
Landa drove in both base runners with a single to left field. Stewart and Paige Scanlin both came through with two-out hits, and Scanlin's second hit of the game scored Landa from second base, giving the Stangs an eight-run lead.
Audrey Sierra (1-0) worked five innings and walked just one batter, throwing 41 of 69 pitches for strikes. Sierra got the Hilltoppers out on eight groundballs, and there were seven flyball outs.
The Mustangs faced three pitchers from St. Edward's, but starter Haley Carmona (1-3) took the loss after working the first three innings.
GAME 2: MIDWESTERN STATE 3, ST. EDWARD'S 4 (9 innings)
Mayorga was 2-for-5 with two RBIs in the nightcap, but Sloane Hill drove in the winning run for the Hilltoppers in the ninth inning.
Ibarra-Subia drove in Stormy Daniel with a two-out hit in the fourth inning as Midwestern State took a short-lived 1-0 lead.
Ryan Rangel led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo homer to left field for the Hilltoppers, tying the game 1-1.
St. Edward's scored a run on one-hit in the fifth inning. Arianna Vidales led off the inning with an infield single and stole second. Vidales scored on Dafne Mercado's sacrifice fly after Rangel walked and Hill was hit by a pitch.
The Mustangs reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning as Mayorga drove a two-out double to left field, scoring Ibarra-Subia and Waller, each reached on an error.
Rangel drove in her second run of the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Zachary Hanna from second base after she reached on a fielding error.
Midwestern State went to extra innings for the fourth time this season.
Acosta and Waller each had two-out singles in the top of the ninth, but they were two of the 10 runners MSU left stranded in the game.
Vidales laid down a bunt-single with one out in the ninth inning. Zachary successfully sacrificed to put the Hilltoppers' speedy centerfielder in scoring position. Sloane singled up the middle, and St. Edward's ended a four-game slide with a 4-3 victory.
Midwestern State fell to 2-6 in one-run games and 0-4 in extra-inning contests this season.
Kayleigh Bowers worked the first four innings in the circle, allowing one run on four hits with one walk. Isabella Cornell (2-5) pitched the final 4 2/3 innings and was the pitcher of record, allowing two earned runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Midwestern State plays a doubleheader at Lubbock Christian on March 15 with first pitch at Maner Park scheduled for 1 p.m.
