Mustangs on the road to face Rattlers and Hilltoppers

SAN ANTONIO – Midwestern State is in the midst of a 10-game road trip, and the Mustangs are visiting St. Mary's and St. Edward's for doubleheaders on Friday and Sunday. The doubleheader at St. Mary's gets underway Friday at noon, with rain in the forecast. There is also an 80 percent chance of rain in Austin on Sunday, when the Mustangs are scheduled to play the Hilltoppers in a twin bill starting at noon.

Midwestern State (3-15, 1-9) fell to 0-5 on the road after being swept last week by Cameron and No. 13-ranked Oklahoma Christian.

Chipper Mayorga leads the Mustangs with a .370 batting average and 10 RBIs this season. The freshman second baseman from San Antonio has at least one hit in 15 of the 18 games in which she has started this season.

Erikha Ibarra-Subia leads the team with an on-base percentage of .460 and is hitting .333 with two doubles and four RBIs for the Mustangs. In her last five games, Ibarra-Subia is hitting .462 (6-for-13) and has scored five runs. The junior outfielder from Albuquerque, New Mexico, has reached base in 14 consecutive games and leads the team with seven stolen bases on eight attempts.

Madison Stewart is hitting .588 in her last seven games (10-for-17) with three doubles and four RBIs in that span. The senior catcher from Lubbock has nine RBIs this season.

Paige Scanlin leads the Mustangs with two home runs, while Marisela Landa and Tatum Waller have also hit homers this season. Landa and Stewart lead the team with four doubles.

Kayleigh Bowers has been a mainstay in the circle for MSU. The junior from Phoenix, Arizona, has made nine starts this season and thrown 53 1/3 innings, walking just 17 batters this season. Bowers has a 3.94 ERA.

Shyanne Florence, Isabella Cornell and Kaylin Salazar have also made starts for the Mustangs this season. Florence has thrown a complete game, and Salazar is 1-0 in three appearances. Cornell is 2-3 with a 3.90 ERA through 23 1/3 innings, and she has a save. Audrey Sierra has made six relief appearances and has a 2.80 ERA through 15 innings pitched.

ST. MARY'S (13-8, 5-3)


Midwestern State has lost its last 17 meetings with the Rattlers, who swept a doubleheader at Mustangs Park last season to take a 22-7 lead in the all-time series. MSU is 1-12 all-time win visiting St. Mary's with its only victory coming in February of 2006, when Midwestern State squeaked out a 1-0 win.

The Rattlers are 4-4 at home this season.

St. Mary's is coming off a split with Texas Woman's, winning the second game of the doubleheader in Denton, Texas, 16-10 after dropping the opener, 3-0.

The Rattlers are batting .325 as a team, which is fifth best in the LSC.

Junior Gabriela Banda is hitting .542, which leads the league, and has six doubles with three home runs for the Rattlers. She leads the team and is third in the conference with 27 RBIs.

Iliana Melendez is hitting .466 and leads the team with 27 hits, including two doubles and three triples.

Raegan Tennill, Miah Corona and Emily Ayala have all hit two homers for the Rattlers, who have scored the fourth most runs in the LSC with 122.

The Rattlers are sixth in the nation and lead the league with 56 stolen bases on 60 attempts. Bryley Westfahl, who has a .434 on-base percentage has 21 steals on 22 attempts. Tennill and Melendez are both 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts. 

The Rattlers have five different starting pitchers this season, led by Ariella Saenz, who has nine starts and has thrown 53 2/3 innings for the Rattlers. The senior hurler is 5-3 with a 4.04 ERA this season, and she has four complete games. 

Emily Ayala has made 13 appearances in the circle for St. Mary's and leads the team with two saves, and she has a 3.80 ERA over 27 2/3 innings.

ST. EDWARD'S (7-12, 4-4) 


Midwestern State ended a five-game losing streak in the series by defeating the Hilltoppers at Mustangs Park, 11-6, in the second game of a doubleheader. Bowers was the starting pitcher for the Mustangs and worked three innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Stewart caught that game and scored a run for the Mustangs. Tatum Waller was 2-for-4 and scored a run in the victory. MSU leads the all-time series, 17-16, and is 1-6 when visiting the Hilltoppers, who swept a three-game series at Diane Daniels Field two years ago.

St. Edward's hosts Lubbock Christian for a doubleheader on Friday before the Mustangs arrive on Sunday.

The Hilltoppers are 3-1 at home this season but are coming off a 1-3 road trip, which wrapped up on Tuesday with a doubleheader split against Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant, Oklahoma. St. Edwards's won the opener against the Savage Storm, 8-2, but lost the nightcap, 2-1.

Sloane Hill is hitting .412 for St. Edward's, and she is second on the team with 11 RBIs. Ryan Rangel leads the Hilltoppers with 12 RBIs.

St. Edward's is hitting .268 as a team, which is 11th in the LSC and has scored 69 runs, which is also 12th in the conference.

Alyssa Burdge leads the team with three home runs, while Dafne Mercado, Ciana Rodriguez and Rangel have two homers apiece. 

Kylen Padgett has made nine starts and has thrown a team-leading 57 innings for the Hilltoppers. The senior is 5-5 with a 3.32 ERA and recorded 45 strikeouts with 21 walks in 11 appearances.

Maddie Aguilar has six starts in the circle and has thrown 32 1/3 innings. She is 1-5 with a 4.55 ERA in nine appearances.

Midwestern State travels to Maner Park for a doubleheader against Lubbock Christian on March 15 and returns home on March 20 to face Eastern New Mexico.
