WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 12-ranked Midwestern State dominated doubles, conceded just six games in the first three completed singles matches, and proved to be perfunctory hosts in a 4-0 dual-match victory over Harding.
Midwestern State is back in the winners' circle after back-to-back losses to No. 2-ranked West Florida and Northeastern State. MSU won its "official" home opener and improved to 5-4 this season.
Emilia Gyorgy won her second straight singles match and improved to 4-4 at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Natalia Alvarez, clinching the triumph for the Mustangs.
Gyorgy and Selin Sepken, ranked No. 19 in doubles, upended fourth-ranked Brooke Coffman and Karli Roux at No. 1 doubles for their third straight win, which clinched the first point of the afternoon.
Camila Garcia and Jasmine Crain remain undefeated at No. 2 doubles, posting their ninth consecutive win with a 6-1 pasting of Natalia Alvarez and Kenna Kelley.
Crain wasted little time winning her second consecutive straight-set singles match in routine fashion over Kenna Kelley, 6-2, 6-0. Crain was the first singles player off the court. The freshman from Edmond, Oklahoma, improved to 3-6 in singles this season.
Garcia moved the Mustangs in position for a sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Coleman and improved to 7-1 at No. 3 singles.
Sepken, ranked No. 3 in singles, led No. 44-ranked Karli Roux at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 2-2, when play was halted after the Mustangs clinched the victory.
Alessia Dolce and Hattie Berend both had comfortable leads at No.4 and No. 6 singles when the Mustangs' celebration started.
Berend and Dolce were able to complete a 6-2 win over Mia Hosking and Paula Rega at No. 3 doubles. The pair is now 2-0 this season for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State plays another dual match at MSU Tennis Center on Saturday as McKendree visits at 1 p.m.
