Riverhawks stun Midwestern State, 4-3

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State won four singles matches and upset No. 12-ranked Midwestern State, 4-3, at the NSU Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.

Midwestern State (4-4) earned the doubles point as No. 19-ranked Emilia Gyorgy and Selin Sepken defeated Daisy Barrow and Renata Morales at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, improving their doubles record to 6-2 for the season.

Jasmine Crain and Camila Garcia secured the point with a 6-3 win over Lucia Bontempo and Sofia Kotliarova at No. 2 doubles. Crain and Garcia remain undefeated this spring with an 8-0 record in doubles.

Barrow pulled Northeastern State even with the Mustangs by upending Alessia Dolce at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Dolce was playing No. 3 singles for the first time this season and fell to 3-4 in singles matches.

Midwestern State reclaimed the advantage as Crain posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Laura Mertens at No. 4 singles. The freshman from Edmond, Oklahoma, earned her second singles victory of the season in eight appearances.

Emilia Gyorgy played No. 1 singles for the first time this season and gave the Mustangs a 3-1 lead with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Kotliarova. Gyorgy played No. 2 singles in the first seven duals this season and improved to 4-4 with the straight-set victory.

Renata Morales was a surprise 6-4, 6-2 winner over Camila Garcia at No. 2 singles. Garcia was 6-1 at No. 3 singles and making her first appearance at Line 2.

Bontempo knotted the dual, 3-3, with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mala Krzanic-Sullivan at No. 6 singles. Krzanic-Sullivan fell to 0-4 during the dual-match season.

Hattie Berend played her third singles match of the season and forced Carla Alvarez Perez into a first-set tiebreak, but the Riverhawks prevailed when Perez completed a 7-6 (2), 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles. Berend is 0-3 in singles matches for MSU.

Northeastern State improved its record to 6-2 and earned its seventh all-time win in 27 meetings with Midwestern State.

The Mustangs are home on Friday afternoon as Harding visits the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
