No. 2-ranked West Florida defeats Midwestern State in Tyler

Mustangs win doubles point

TYLER, Texas – Midwestern State won the doubles point against No. 2-ranked West Florida, but the Argonauts swept the singles matches to defeat the No. 12-ranked Mustangs, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Midwestern State is 4-3 in the dual match season, and the Argonauts of the Gulf South Conference improved to 6-4, winning all three duals against Lone Star Conference opponents this week.

Selin Sepken and Emilia Gyorgy clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 victory over No. 5-ranked Sandra Recuenco Tarin and Carlota Verdu. Sepken and Gyorgy are 5-2 at No. 1 doubles for Midwestern State.

Camila Garcia and Jasmine Crain handled Guadalupe Martinez and Aline Midori, improving to 7-0 at No. 2 doubles with a 6-3 triumph.

Recuenco Tarin put the first point on the board for West Florida with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gyorgy, who had played back-to-back three-set matches against West Alabama and Auburn Montgomery on Friday and Saturday.

Verdu, who is No. 11 in the ITA Division II singles rankings, won a marathon match against No. 10-ranked Sepken at No. 1 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, and the fifth-year senior from Turkey fell to 5-1 in the dual-match season.

Garcia had a six-match winning streak against NCAA Division II opponents snapped as Midori won a rollercoaster confrontation at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.

In a battle of freshman, Kylie Kochis won a three-set match with Crain at No. 5 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Martinez earned a straight-set win over Alessia Dolce at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

Sophie Smith was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Hattie Berend at No. 6 singles.

Midwestern State is back on the courts for a dual match at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Friday. First serve in Durant, Oklahoma, is scheduled for noon.
