HUMBLE, Texas — Midwestern State sits in second place following the opening two rounds of the Houston Classic, hosted at Golf Club of Houston on Monday afternoon. MSU combined to shoot 3-over par (579) through the opening 36 holes, trailing the leaders DBU, who shot 12-under par (291, 288 - 564).
Seth Bearden sits in a strong position following the opening two rounds, carding two rounds under par to begin the tournament. The Crowell, Texas native potted nine birdies over the two rounds, finishing 3-under (69) in the opening round, followed by a 2-under par (70) second round. The seniors 5-under par through two rounds sits in 4
th place, six strokes behind the leader (Bryant Hiskey II, Houston, (11-under par)).
Anniston McIlwain finished 1-over par (73, 72), totaling 8 birdies and 23 pars. McIlwain sits in 15
th, just two strokes outside the top-10. The sophomore is the 5th if the 90 player field for par-3s, with and average score of 2.88 on the course's four par 3s.
Both
Nathan Nelson and
Ryan Griff each shot 4-over par in the first two rounds, landing in 28
th. Nelson battled back from a first round 77, ending the day with a 71 in the second round, racking up 3 birdies and 13 pars in his second time around the course. Griff posted a 73 in the first round, along with a 75 second round.
Hank Germany combined for 27 holes of par or better during the opening day, shooting 154 (+10) over the two rounds.
The Mustangs return to the course tomorrow to wrap up the final 18 holes of the tournament. Midwestern State will be paired with first place DBU, and third place Harding, teeing off at 8 a.m.
