Midwestern State meets Patriots at UT Tyler

TYLER, Texas – Midwestern State looks to rebound from an excruciating 75-74 loss at UT Dallas as it visits UT Tyler on Monday night. Tipoff at Louise Herrington Patriot Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Midwestern State (7-13, 5-18) held a 10-point halftime lead at UT Dallas on Saturday afternoon, but the Comets rallied for the one-point victory after Zach Spitzer scored on an inbounds pass from the baseline with 1.8 seconds remaining in the game. Midwestern State fell to 1-8 on the road this season.

Davyon Butler scored 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, while Terrance Ramirez finished with 14 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Jordan Reed added 13 points for the Mustangs. Kadon Jackson played a season-high 19 minutes against the Comets and contributed seven points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Midwestern State is third in the Lone Star Conference and 20th among NCAA Division II schools with 32.5 points per game from the bench. 

Midwestern State is scoring 74.6 points per game but is allowing opponents to score 79.6 points per contest. The Mustangs are third in the league with 14.2 fast-break points per game. MSU is shooting 43.7 percent from the field, and its opponents are shooting 44.8 percent.

Horton is one of three players averaging double figures for the Mustangs with 12 points per game. Ramirez, who has scored double figures in three of his last four games, is averaging 11.1 points per game. Jonathan Jackson, hitting 43 percent of his shots from 3-point range (46 of 109), is scoring 10.2 points per game.  Davyon Butler is scoring more than nine points per game, and Charles McClennahan, Jr. is adding 8.9 points per contest.

Horton and Ramirez are combining with for six assists per game. Horton leads the team with 3.3 helpers per contest, and Ramirez is dishing out 2.7 assists per outing.

Cole is grabbing 5.1 rebounds per contest, and McClennahan is second on the team with 4.9 boards per game. Midwestern State is seventh in the LSC with 36.8 rebounds per game.

Horton has missed the last two games for the Mustangs with a lower leg injury and is considered day-to-day.

UT Tyler (10-9, 4-9)

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Patriots, 6-4, and won three of the last four meetings, including a 62-52 victory at Louise Herrington Patriot Center last season.

UT Tyler is 3-3 at home this season and returns home following a 1-2 road trip, which included a 91-85 victory over West Texas A&M. The Patriots lost at No. 18 Eastern New Mexico, 80-70, before falling to No. 25 Dallas Baptist on Thursday night, 90-79. UT Tyler was idle on Saturday.

The Patriots lead the LSC with 39 rebounds per game and a plus-7.3 rebounding margin. Sam Phipps is the fifth-leading rebounder in the conference with 7.9 boards per contest. Phipps is second in the league with 1.4 blocks per game.

Only Eastern New Mexico scores more fastbreak points in the LSC than UT Tyler, which scores 15.7 points per game in transition and boasts the third-best field goal percentage in the conference at 47.5.

UT Tyler is scoring 74.8 points per game, and its opponents score 71.7 per contest while shooting 41.3 percent from the field, which gives the Patriots the fourth-best field goal percentage defense in the LSC.

Sean Emfinger leads the scoring attack for UT Tyler with 12.3 points per game, while John Barbee is scoring 10.6, and Kyle Morgan is adding 10.1 points per outing.

Xavier Williams is dishing out three assists while scoring more than eight points and grabbing nearly four rebounds per contest.

Tim Moser is in his third season as the head coach at UT Tyler and already has the most wins in a season. The Patriots finished last season with an 8-20 record and went 3-25 two years ago.

Midwestern State is back in action on Thursday night as it hosts Texas A&M International at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
