DALLAS – Midwestern State aims for a fourth win in six outings as it meets Lone Star Conference newcomer UT Dallas for the first time in program history. Tipoff at UTD Activity Center is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Midwestern State (7-12, 5-7) was shorthanded on Tuesday night as a virus ravaged the roster, and No. 7-ranked Lubbock Christian led by as many as 28 points on its way to a 77-57 victory. Midwestern State led the Chaparrals 9-6 a little more than four minutes into the contest, but LCU went on a 24-2 run to take a 19-point lead with 9:04 remaining in the first half.
Terrance Ramirez was the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting, while
Tehshaundre Cole finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, posting his first double-double of the season. Cole was 6 of 7 from the floor. Midwestern State shot 37.3 percent as a team and was just 3 of 18 from beyond the arc without its best 3-point shooter,
Jonathan Jackson.
Jackson and
Levi Rutledge did not travel with the team due to illness. The Mustangs also played without leading scorer
Orlando Horton, Jr., who suited out but did not play due to a minor injury.
Midwestern State is third in the Lone Star Conference and 20th among NCAA Division II schools with 32.5 points per game from the bench.
Midwestern State is scoring 74.6 points per game but is allowing opponents to score 79.6 points per contest. The Mustangs are third in the league with 14.2 fast-break points per game. MSU is shooting 43.7 percent from the field, and its opponents are shooting 44.8 percent.
Horton is one of three players averaging double figures for the Mustangs with 12 points per game. Ramirez, coming off his third game with 20 or more points, is averaging 10.9 points per game.
Jonathan Jackson, who is hitting 42.3 percent of his shots from 3-point range (44 of 104), is scoring 10.3 points per game.
Davyon Butler and
Charles McClennahan, Jr., are both scoring more than nine points per game.
Horton and Ramirez are combining with for six assists per game. Horton leads the team with 3.3 helpers per contest, and Ramirez is dishing out 2.7 assists per outing.
Cole is grabbing 5.3 rebounds per contest, and
Charles McClennahan, Jr. is second on the team with 5.2 boards per game. Midwestern State is seventh in the LSC with 36.8 rebounds per game.
UT DALLAS (5-15, 4-8)
UT Dallas has a five-game losing streak and is 3-7 at home this season following an 86-60 loss to Lubbock Christian on Thursday night.
The Comets were held to 26.7 shooting from the field in the first half, hitting just 1-of-14 shots from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes and trailed 55-23 at intermission.
Hudson Goellner scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting to lead the Comets, while Jordan Balderaz and Bryce Potts each finished with 11 points for UTD, which was outscored in the paint 46-26 and outrebounded 43-31. Goellner, Zach Spitzer and Christian O'Connoer all had four rebounds for the Comets. Peyton Dulin dished out five assists and had two of three steals in the loss.
Jordan Jefferson is the leading scorer for UTD with 19 point per game, but the sophomore from Forney, Texas, has only appeared in nine games and has not played since scoring 18 in a 78-70 loss at UT Permian Basin.
Goellner is averaging 11.7 points and Dulin adds 11.5 points per game for the Comets, who are scoring 75.6 points per contest while allowing the opposition to score 78.9 points per game.
UTD is shooting 31.9 percent from beyond the arc and 42.2 percent from the field overall. Opponents are shooting 46.1 percent and hitting 32.5 percent of their attempts from long range.
Dulin is the most prolific shooter from the perimeter, but he is only hitting 27.4 percent of his 3-point shots (32 of 117). Jefferson is 30 of 72 (41.7%) from beyond the arc, and Matthew Soto is 25 of 65 (38.5%).
Geollner, Spitzer and Balderaz are all averaging more than 5.5 rebounds per game for the Comets, who grab 37.7 caroms per contest.
Dulin leads the team with 4.6 assists per game and is also getting more than two steals an outing for the Comets.
Spitzer is averaging 1.1 blocks per game for a team that has more than four blocks per outing.
Midwestern State completes a three-game road trip on Monday night as it visits UT Tyler. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
