Offense explodes in second game of doubleheader against UTPB

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (3-11, 1-5) split a doubleheader against UT Permian Basin (8-5, 1-3), securing an overwhelming 18-1 victory in the second game after narrowly falling 2-0 in the first matchup at Mustangs Park.

In the nightcap, Midwestern State took an early lead in the first inning when Erikha Ibarra-Subia walked, and Hayeli Acosta singled, setting the stage for Tatum Waller's sacrifice bunt that allowed Ibarra-Subia to score. Acosta later scored on a wild pitch, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage.

The second inning saw MSU extend its lead significantly. Madison Stewart's single was followed by Myka Riley's walk and Ibarra-Subia's single, loading the bases. Acosta's single drove in a run, and Waller's two-RBI single pushed the score further. Marisela Landa's three-run homer capped the inning, bringing the tally to 9-0.

Continuing its momentum in the third inning, Ibarra-Subia scored on a fielding error, and subsequent plays, including a sacrifice bunt from Waller and a double by Stewart, contributed to an eight-run inning, increasing the advantage to 17-0. In the fourth inning, the Falcons managed to score one run on a sacrifice fly, while MSU added another run with Landa's RBI single, finishing the game with an 18-1 victory.

Ibarra-Subia tallied three hits and scored three runs, contributing to a consistent offensive effort. Stewart recorded three hits and drove in two runs, including a double. Landa hit a home run and drove in four runs, while Waller added four RBIs to the mix. Isabela Cornell pitched three innings without allowing a hit or run, striking out three. Shyanne Florence entered in relief, pitching two innings and allowing one earned run on two hits.

In the first game, Midwestern State was held to three hits over seven innings, while UT Permian Basin managed six hits and scored once in both the first and third innings. UT Permian Basin struck early in the first inning when Angelina Arriaga scored on a fielder's choice by Gabriella Cabrera, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Ibarra-Subia walked and advanced to third but was left stranded, keeping the score at UT Permian Basin 1, Midwestern State 0 after the first inning.

In the third inning, UT Permian Basin extended its lead to 2-0 as Keri Sanford tripled and was brought home by Arriaga's sacrifice fly. The Mustangs were unable to capitalize on a walk to Hayeli Acosta, concluding the inning with the Falcons leading 2-0.

The Mustangs attempted to rally continued throughout the game. In the seventh, Marisela Landa walked, and a double by Madison Stewart advanced a pinch runner to third, but MSU was unable to convert the opportunity into runs.

Stewart recorded a hit and added a double during her three plate appearances. Myka Riley contributed a hit in her only at-bat. Ibarra-Subia reached base twice with two walks and successfully stole a base. Kayleigh Bowers pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out three batters. Isabela Cornell entered in relief in the seventh inning, pitching one inning and giving up one hit with one strikeout.

In their next outing, MSU will face Cameron on Friday, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m. in Lawton, Oklahoma.
