Stangs hope bats stay hot north of the Red River

LAWTON, Oklahoma – Midwestern State embarks on a 10-game road trip as it visits Cameron and No. 13-ranked Oklahoma Christian this week.

Midwestern State (3-11, 1-5) saw the bats come to life in the final game of a six-game homestand, and the Mustangs pummeled UT Permian Basin in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday, 18-1, in five innings. 

Outfielder Erikha Ibarra-Subia was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and she drove in a run at the top of the order for the Mustangs. Shortstop Hayeli Acosta, who hit second in the order, was also 3-for-3 and scored four runs with an RBI.

First baseman Marisela Landa was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs in the onslaught. Centerfielder Tatum Waller also drove in four runs for MSU, which pounded out 17 hits in the victory.  Catcher Madison Stewart was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and she had two RBIs for the Mustangs.

Isabela Cornell did not allow a hit in three innings, struck out two Falcons, and she earned the win in the circle. Shyanne Florence worked two relief innings and allowed just one run on two hits with two strikeouts.

Midwestern State has been in nine games decided by two runs or less this season, including seven one-run games, and the Mustangs are 2-7 in those tightly played games.

Chipper Mayorga has at least one hit in 13 of her 14 starts at second base this season. The freshman from San Antonio is hitting .395 (17 of 43) with three doubles and eight RBIs. She has only struck out four times this season. Her OPS is a team-leading .923.

Mayorga and Landa are tied for the team lead with eight RBIs, while Stewart has driven in seven runs this season. Waller and Paige Scanlin are both responsible for six RBIs. 
Ibarra-Subia is hitting .341 with a team-leading six steals for the Stangs, who are fifth in the league with 22 steals as a team.

Acosta leads the team with 11 runs scored, and Ibarra-Subia has scored 10 runs in 14 games.

Kayleigh Bowers has been the busiest pitcher for the Mustangs, hurling 47 innings four complete games. The junior right-hander from Phoenix has a 2.53 ERA this season but is 0-6 despite allowing three earned runs or less in six of her seven starts for the Mustangs.

Cornell is 2-2 with a 1.53 ERA, allowing 16 hits over 18 1/3 innings. The junior from Fort Worth, Texas, has struck out 13 batters while only walking six in her six appearances, which includes two starts. Opponents are hitting .229 against the right-hander.

The Mustangs pitching staff boasts the fifth-best ERA in the LSC at 3.16 and is only allowing 8.3 hits per seven innings, which is sixth best in the conference. The MSU staff has the sixth-best WHIP in the LSC at 1.53.

Stewart is fourth in the league, throwing out four runners from behind home plate, and opponents are just 17 of 24 on stolen-base attempts.
 

CAMERON (6-9, 0-6)


Midwestern State is 38-35 in the all-time series with the Aggies, who have won 10 of the last 11 meetings and swept a doubleheader at McMahon Field in Lawton last season, winning the first game 12-2 and taking the nightcap, 11-6, extending their winning streak in the series to eight games. MSU is 14-19 when visiting Cameron.

The Aggies won their last nine home games, dating back to last season, and they are 2-0 at home this season.

Cameron has a six-game losing streak after being swept by Oklahoma Christian, Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M in conference doubleheaders.

Haley Gardella leads the conference and is 10th in NCAA Division II with six home runs. She is fourth in the LSC and 15th in the nation with 22 RBIs for the Aggies. 
The sophomore from Royse City is hitting .382 with a slugging percentage of .782, which is sixth best in the conference.

The Aggies' pitching staff has an ERA of 5.56 and is allowing 9.3 hits per seven innings. Their 2.01 WHIP is 15th in the LSC.
 

OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN (13-3, 5-1)


Midwestern State is just 5-17 when facing the Eagles, who have won 12 of the last 13 meetings, including a 2-1 and an 8-0 victory at Tom Heath Field last season. The Mustangs have only one win in eight visits to Oklahoma Christian.

Oklahoma Christian hosts Lubbock Christian for a doubleheader before the Mustangs arrive on Sunday.

The Eagles are 5-1 at home this season and have a three-game winning streak overall.

Oklahoma Christian had a season-high 17 hits in an 11-5 win over West Texas A&M on Feb. 20, and then swept Eastern New Mexico, 11-3 and 4-1.

Kadence Brewer was named the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week, going 10-for-23 at the plate while slugging .870 with three doubles, two triples and a home run.

Brewster is leading the team with a .404 batting average and is sporting an eight-game hitting streak. The Wichita, Kan., native paces OC with 23 hits, 17 runs scored and eight doubles as part of her 41 total bases with Kallie Rupp following behind her in second with 29.

The Eagles have the third-best ERA in the LSC at 3.11 and have the second-best fielding percentage in the league at .969.

Jill Dickson is 6-2 in the circle with three shutouts and two complete games this season. The senior from Edmond, Oklahoma, has a 2.41 ERA in 40.2 innings with eight starts and nine appearances. Dickson is holding opponents to a .241 batting average, and she recorded 44 strikeouts with just 16 walks.
