Angelo State sweeps doubleheader at Mustangs Park

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State faced No. 9-ranked Angelo State in a doubleheader on Friday at Mustangs Park, suffering defeats in both games, 18-0 and 7-2.

In the first game, Angelo State capitalized on a nine-run first inning to secure the victory. Karli Manney scored on a throwing error, and subsequent errors contributed to additional runs. Taylor Haywood was hit by a pitch, bringing in another run, while Kamryn Loeffler and Kylie Forney both secured RBIs. Tatiana Trotter's triple cleared the bases, adding three more runs.

In the third inning, the Rambelles extended their lead with five runs. Trotter doubled for two RBIs, and Zoey Sifuentes singled to drive in another run. Brianna Waters later singled, bringing in two more, making it 14-0 at the close of the inning. Angelo State added three more runs in the fourth inning, with Penelope Hurtado scoring on Sara Paniagua's double, followed by Greysen Collins hitting a two-run homer. The Rambelles increased their lead to 17-0. In the fifth inning, Taylor Haywood scored on a fielder's choice by Hurtado, finalizing the score at 18-0.

Erikha Ibarra-Subia recorded two hits in three plate appearances, showing consistent contact. Chipper Mayorga contributed with a double in one of her two at-bats, while Marisela Landa added a hit in her two at-bats. Isabela Cornell pitched for 2/3 of an inning, allowing three hits and nine runs, though none were earned. Kaylin Salazar pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed nine runs, eight of which were earned, on nine hits while striking out three.

In the second game, Angelo State took the lead on Abby Brand's single to left field, driving in two runs. Midwestern State responded promptly when Erikha Ibarra-Subia singled and later scored on Tatum Waller's two-run homer over the left field fence, leveling the score at 2-2.

In the third inning, Zoey Sifuentes hit a double to left center, allowing Tatiana Trotter to score from first, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of Angelo State. In the seventh inning, Angelo State extended its lead with Ashleigh Dendas doubling, followed by a series of scoring plays including a two-RBI triple by Kamryn Loeffler. Taylor Haywood added an RBI single, culminating in a four-run inning for Angelo State, making the score 7-2.

Waller led the Maroon & Gold with a powerful performance, tallying two hits, including a home run, and driving in two runs. Ibarra-Subia made an impact on the bases, successfully stealing two bases. Stewart contributed with a perfect pinch-hit appearance, collecting a hit in her lone plate appearance. Audrey Acosta showcased her defensive skills with four assists in the field.

Midwestern State (2-10, 0-4) has a six-game losing streak. Angelo State (13-4, 2-0) recorded the 1,000th win in the history of the program and opened up conference play with two road wins. 

Looking ahead, the Mustangs are set to face UT Permian Basin on Sunday, Feb. 22 at Mustangs Park in Wichita Falls, Texas, with the game beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
