SAN ANTONIO – No. 29-ranked Midwestern State is part of the 16-team field at the Rattler Invitational this week at Dominion Country Club.The 54-hole tournament begins on Monday with the final round to be played on Tuesday.
The Mustangs are coming off a fifth-place finish in the Southern Invite in Spring, Texas. Midwestern State shot 5-over 293 in the final round, which was three strokes better than any other team in the field at Cypresswood Golf Club.
Romane Lacoste, Mary Kerr and Madison Wert all finished among the top 20 in the 80-player field.
Lacoste had the best result among the Mustangs, finishing the tournament in 12th place at 9-over. Kerr finished in 14th place at 10-over par, shooting even-par in the final round. Wert, competing as an individual, birdied three of her final five holes and finished in 19th place at 12-over par.
Kodi Nolen had four birdies and an eagle during her final round to finish in 26th place at 13-over par. Alli Reily shot 3-over 75 in her final round to finish in 28th place at 14-over par. Emme Darnold fired a 2-over 74 in the final round after shooting 9-over in each of the first two rounds and was 52nd after 54 holes.
All six players will be competing in the Rattler Invitational with Darnold competing as an individual. Kaetie Samuels will also be competing as an individual in the 93-player field.
Samuels was last entered in the Midwestern State Invitational in October and finished 31st in a field of 95 with a 16-over 232. Samuels was also competing as an individual in that event.
The field includes 11 other Lone Star Conference schools, including the defending champion and host school, St. Mary's.
Dallas Baptist, Western New Mexico, Cameron, Texas A&M International, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Lubbock Christian, Angelo State, UT Dallas, UT Tyler and UT Permian Basin are in the field, which includes Washburn, Pittsburg State, Arkansas Tech, Northwestern Oklahoma State and Colorado Christian.
Midwestern State was fifth in the Rattler Invitational last year with a 65-over 929, finishing 47 strokes behind St. Mary's.
Reily, Kerr, Nolen and Wert were all in the field at Dominion Country Club last year. Reily tied for 11th place at 10-over. Kerr tied for 39th at 22-over. Wert, competing as an individual, was 54th at 26-over. Nolen finished 28-over and was tied for 60th place.
Former Texas Open champion Bill Johnston designed the course at Dominion Country Club in Hill Country. The course is situated along the banks of Leon Creek and incorporates 25 acres of man-made lakes and more than 60 sand traps.
The first 36 holes are scheduled to be played on Monday under mostly sunny skies with winds blowing out of the east at 5-10 mph. The high temperature is expected to be in the high-60s. The final 18 holes on Tuesday should be played in sunny and breezy conditions with a high temperature in the mid-70s and a southerly 10-15 mph wind.
