WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern continues its six-game homestand as it hosts No. 9-ranked Angelo State and UT Permian Basin this week. The Rambelles visit for a doubleheader that gets underway at 2 p.m. on Friday, and the Falcons land at Mustangs Park on Sunday with the twibill starting at 1 p.m.
Midwestern State (2-8, 0-2) has played seven games decided by one run this season, including a 13-inning, 3-2 loss to Lubbock Christian at Mustangs Park on Sunday. It was the third extra-inning game of the season for the Mustangs, and the longest game by innings in program history. The 13-inning affair is also the longest NCAA Division II game played this season. Lubbock Christian won the nightcap, 5-0, as MSU was shut out for the first time this year and suffered its fourth consecutive defeat.
The Midwestern State pitching staff has a 2.58 ERA this season with 38 strikeouts and 19 walks.
Kayleigh Bowers has a 1.80 ERA in five starts for the Mustangs and has thrown four complete games. The junior right-hander from Phoenix worked 7 2/3 innings against Lubbock Christian, allowing two runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Bowers has only allowed nine earned runs over 35 innings with 15 strikeouts and seven walks.
Isabella Cornell worked 5 1/3 innings against Lubbock Christian and conceded just one hit in relief of Bowers. Cornell is 1-1 in three appearances this season with a 2.05 ERA, recording eight strikeouts with just three walks.
Audrey Sierra has a 0.81 ERA with 8 2/3 innings of work in two relief appearances for the Mustangs. She allowed just one run on two hits over 5 1/3 innings of relief against Lubbock Christian.
Chipper Mayorga was 3-for-7 in the two games against Lubbock Christian and is leading MSU offensive attack with a .394 batting average, eight RBIs and two runs scored.
Madison Stewart has five RBIs, while
Paige Scanlin and
Marisela Landa have each driven in four runs for Midwestern State. Scanlin has both home runs for MSU this season.
Erikha Ibarra-Subia and
Sydnie Rios both have eight hits over the first 10 games for the Mustangs, and
Hayeli Acosta has seven hits. The three players have combined to score 16 of the 29 runs for the team this season.
ANGELO STATE (11-4, 0-0)
Midwestern State is 22-47 all-time against the Rambelles but won three of the four games last season, including two wins at Mustangs Park. MSU is 13-17 when hosting Angelo State, which has won 32 of the 41 conference matchups.
Angelo State lost three of its last four games on the heels of a five-game winning streak and winning 10 of its first 11 games.
The Rambelles have a plus-53 run differential and are hitting .352 as a team.
Zoey Sifuentes is hitting .512 (21-for-41) with 11 extra-base hits, including three home runs, and has 18 RBIs.
Tatiana Trotter leads the team with 20 RBIs and is hitting .432 (19-for-44). Trotter also has 11 extra-base hits with three home runs for the Rambelles, who have hit 14 homers as a team. Larryn Feuge is tied fro the team lead with three home runs.
The Rambelles have the fifth most hits in NCAA Division II with 137 and has the 12th best slugging percentage in the nation at .565.
Angelo State has been successful with 41 stolen bases on 44 attempts and has the fourth-most steals among D2 programs. Kylie Fornie leads the team and is eighth in the nation with 12 stolen bases and has only been caught twice.
Ashleigh Dendas is 5-1 in the circle for Angelo State with a 2.94 ERA. Dendas has six starts in seven appearances and struck out 28 over 31 innings to start the season.
Madison Ruiz has made six starts for the Rambelles and is 2-3 with 24 strikeouts over 27 2/3 innings. Ruiz has a 3.04 ERA.
UT PERMIAN BASIN (7-2, 0-0)
Midwestern State is 24-7 all-time against the Falcons and has a five-game winning streak in the series, including four wins last season. The Mustangs are 12-3 when hosting UTPB.
The Falcons play a doubleheader at Lubbock Christian before arriving at Mustangs Park on Sunday afternoon, but enter this week with a four-game winning streak after sweeping Northwestern Oklahoma State at UTPB Softball Park last weekend.
UTPB was 1-24 on the road last season.
Keri Sanford is hitting .464 for the Falcons with 13 base hits in 28 at bats over nine games. Angelina Arriaga has started six games and leads the team with eight RBIs and 16 total bases. Arriaga has two home runs and two doubles for UTPB, which has a plus-7 run differential through nine games.
UTPB has three stolen bases on five attempts. Sanford, Carlee Quintero and Kaylee Moses have all swiped a base for the Falcons, who have 23 extra-base hits, including nine home runs.
Arriaga, Gabriella Cabrera and Laila Vasquez have all hit two home runs for UTPB, which is hitting .298 as a team.
Jessica Cantrell and Priscilla Medina have both started the season 3-0 in the circle. Cantrell has a 0.80 ERA and opponents are only hitting .188 against her. Medina is holding opponents to a .175 batting average and has a 2.47 ERA.
Midwestern State makes the short trip to Cameron for a doubleheader on Feb. 27. First pitch at McMahon Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
