ODESSA, Texas — Midwestern State (8-16, 6-11) fell to the University of Texas Permian Basin (10-15, 6-11) with a final score of 105-99 in a double-overtime affair on Thursday night. The Mustangs scored 54 points in the paint but could not overcome the Falcons' 13 three-pointers.
Orlando Horton, Jr. hit a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining in the first overtime period that tied the game 91-91 and forced the second overtime period.
Midwestern State took a 97-93 lead in the second overtime when
Terrance Ramirez scored with a layup on a fastbreak. UTPB started a 12-0 run with a TJ McKenzie layup and hit eight straight free throws before McKenzie closed the run with another layup.
Midwestern State and UTPB engaged in a closely contested first half, with both teams exchanging leads four times. The Maroon & Gold began with a free throw from
Tehshaundre Cole, but UTPB quickly responded with a 3-pointer by Sharrod Taylor. Tash Lunday contributed significantly for the Falcons with a 3-pointer and an assist, helping his team maintain a competitive edge. The Mustangs gained momentum with a late 3-pointer by
Jonathan Jackson in transition, sealing the half with a 45-41 lead.
Terrance Ramirez's layup and subsequent free throw at the 1:19 mark were pivotal in maintaining Midwestern State's slight advantage.
MSU and the Falcons engaged in a closely contested second half. The Mustangs started with a 3-pointer by
Vojin Mastilovic at the 18:03 mark, extending their lead to 50-42. UTPB tied the game at 50 with a fast-break 3-pointer from Sharrod Taylor at 16:05. As the half progressed, MSU regained momentum with a layup from Orlando Horton Jr. at 1:11, leveling the game at 79. Cole secured the final defensive rebound and added two free throws with 59 seconds left, ensuring the score remained tied at the end of the half.
In overtime, the Maroon & Gold and UTPB exchanged leads as the tension mounted. With 4:49 remaining in the second overtime, Ramirez hit a jumper to give Midwestern St. a 93-91 advantage. Lunday responded for the Falcons by tying the game at 93 with a pair of free throws.
Kadon Jackson's layup briefly restored the lead for the Mustangs, but UTPB surged ahead in the final minutes.
