Midwestern State survives Rattlers, wins at home 2-1

Game shortened by lightning and heavy rain in 80th minute

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Sloane Sullivan and Madison Brinkley each scored their fifth goal of the season as Midwestern State defeated St. Mary's, 2-1, in a game called in the 80th minute due to lightning and heavy rain at Stang Park on Wednesday night.

Midwestern State improved to 13-1-1overall and 9-1-1 in the Lone Star Conference. The Mustangs have a 12-game home winning streak and are unbeaten on its home ground in  the last 28 games.

St. Mary's is 6-7-2 this season with a 4-6-1 record in the conference. The Rattlers are 2-6-0 on the road this season.

The Mustangs created the first extended attacking spell with corner kicks at 7:36 and 8:07 around Bella Rose's saved shot, and Lauren Short answered the Rattlers' first shot on frame with a save at 13:15. Sullivan opened the scoring at 18:51, finishing from short range into an empty net after Ella Adams played a ball over the top that bounced through. After Brinkley put another shot on frame, StMU earned a corner and later tested Short again at 23:44, with both sides trading fouls and chances through the middle of the half. MSU generated three shots between 31:07 and 34:47 and added late attempts from Lexi Gonzales and Marlene Myrvold, whose 45:00 shot was saved, to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

MSU created the first sustained push of the second half, earning a corner at 48:49 before Leeci Snyder missed left and Brinkley scored at 53:01 off assists from Bella Rose and Sullivan to make it 2-0. The half grew more stop-start through a run of fouls, while the Mustangs continued to create chances with Gonzales missing left and Sophie Ferro forcing a save from Callie Gilliam. StMU answered after Anabelle Rodriguez hit the woodwork at 70:03, with Helen Lazaro scoring from Emilee Durante at 71:34 to cut the margin to 2-1. The Maroon & Gold responded with three shots in the next three minutes, including saved attempts by Jimena Rodriguez and Adams, and held that 2-1 score when a lightning strike in the area halted play. Lightning and heavy rain prevented the resumption of play. Since at least 70 minutes were completed before the stoppage, the game is official.
