Mustangs hope to rattle St. Mary's at Stang Park

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State hosts St. Mary's in the penultimate home game of the regular season on Wednesday night. Kickoff at Stang Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Mustangs defeated Sul Ross State 3-0 on Saturday at Stang Park. MSU finished with a 39-4 shot advantage, including 20 shots in the first half and 19 more after halftime. MSU scored once before halftime and twice in the second half while holding the Lobos to one shot on goal. Sophie Ferro, Morgan Countryman and Brianna Gomez scored goals in the victory. Bella Pillow's long free kick set up Ferro's header in the first half, and Madison Brinkley assisted on two second-half goals.

Midwestern State improved to 12-1-1 overall with an 8-1-1 record in the Lone Star Conference. The Mustangs are 8-0-0 at Stang Park, where they have a 27-game unbeaten streak. The last home loss came against Dallas Baptist on Oct. 21 of 2023. The Patriots 3-1 win at Stang Park was 1,089 days ago. The Mustangs have a 10-game winning streak on home ground since their 1-1 draw with UT Tyler on Oct. 26 of last year.

Goalkeeper Lauren Short has the third-best goals-against average in the LSC at 0.4 and has posted 10 shutouts this season. She also has one combined shutout for the Stangs, who have tied the school record of 11 shutouts set in 2006. The sophomore from Frisco, Texas, has tied the school record for clean sheets by one goalkeeper set by Courtney Burnette in 2016. Short has the third-best save percentage in the conference at .853.

Midwestern State is outscoring its opponents 34-5 and boasts the sixth best goal differential in NCAA Division II at plus-29.

The Mustangs are second in the conference with 2.4 goals per game, which is 26th in the nation. Fifteen different players have scored goals for MSU this season, and 14 players have recorded at least one assist for the Stangs.

The Mustangs are averaging 2.5 assists per game and 7.4 points per game, which are both second in the LSC.

The Mustangs are outshooting opponents per game, 20-7. Opponents have only managed 35 shots on goal. An opponent had not taken more than five shots on goal against MSU in 31 straight matches before West Texas A&M managed eight shots on goal in their 3-1 win at Canyon, Texas, on Oct. 7.

Midwestern State is 8-7-4 in its all-time series with St. Mary's and is unbeaten in the last three meetings. The Stangs played a 2-2 draw in San Antonio last season as Marlene Myrvold scored for MSU, and Sullivan had an assist for the Mustangs, who outshot the Rattlers, 19-11.

Midwestern State is 4-2-3 when hosting St. Mary's, including a 3-1 victory at Stang Park two years ago in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship.

The Rattlers arrive at Stang Park with a 6-6-2 overall record, and they are 4-5-1 in conference play this season.

St. Mary's halted a six-game winless streak with a 2-0 win over Angelo State and improved its home record to 4-1-2, but the Rattlers are 2-5-0 on the road, including a 3-2 loss at Sul Ross State on Oct. 7.

Isabella Salas scored in the 40th minute, and Helen Lazaro scored in the 90th minute against the Rambelles, who were held to three shots. Callie Gilliam made two saves in the victory for the Rattlers.
