MANSFIELD, Texas — Midwestern State fell to Central Missouri 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Fields at Station 63. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mustangs scored six runs in the bottom of the 6th to rally past Rockhurst, 10-9 in the nightcap.
GAME 1: Central Missouri 2, Midwestern State 1
Midwestern State's lone run came from a solo home run, but Central Missouri secured the win with runs in the second and seventh innings.
In the second inning, Central Missouri took the lead with an RBI hit-by-pitch from Cydney Fullerton, scoring Jadyn Sheffield. Midwestern State responded in the fifth inning with a solo home run by
Paige Scanlin, tying the game at 1–1.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh inning when Central Missouri's Emma McCall hit a walk-off home run down the left field line, sealing the game 2–1 for CMU.Â
Kayleigh Bowers pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and two earned runs over six innings while striking out four.
Chipper Mayorga contributed with a hit and advanced a runner in three plate appearances.
Tatum Waller drew a walk in her two plate appearances.
Emma McCall and Andi Siebeneck stood out for the Jennies. McCall delivered a key solo home run, contributing both a run and an RBI in three plate appearances. Siebeneck excelled in the circle, pitching a complete game with seven innings, allowing only two hits and one earned run, while striking out two. Lexi Blackmon also made a significant impact with her performance, recording one hit in three at-bats and a stolen base.
GAME 2: Midwestern State 10, Rockhurst 9
The Mustangs capitalized on a six-run sixth inning to overcome the Hawks' early lead, with the Mustangs' lineup accumulating 11 hits, including a home run.
Rockhurst began the game with a strong start, putting up two runs in the first inning through a combination of a single, a double, and scoring on a wild pitch. MSU had a chance to respond but left a runner stranded on third, trailing 2–0 after the first. RU extended their lead in the second inning, scoring four more runs with a series of hits and capitalizing on a wild pitch and a fielding error, advancing to a 6–0 advantage.
The Maroon & Gold found momentum in the third inning.
Hayeli Acosta's bunt single initiated a rally, followed by
Erikha Ibarra-Subia's single. A series of aggressive base running and tactical bunts brought in three unearned runs, closing the gap to 6–3. In the fourth inning, Ibarra-Subia doubled to bring Acosta home, tightening the score to 6–4.Â
The sixth inning saw the Mustangs' offense explode.
Mia Sanchez's pinch-hit single set the stage for a rally, followed by consecutive singles loading the bases.
Stormy Daniel's sacrifice fly and
Chipper Mayorga's two-run single made the score 9-7 RU. A crucial three-run homer by
Paige Scanlin then put MSU ahead, 10–9, after a six-run inning.
Ibarra-Subia recorded three hits and scored two runs, contributing with a double and an RBI in her three plate appearances. Mayorga added three RBIs and stole two bases, advancing runners with every opportunity. Scanlin hit a three-run homer, her only hit in four at-bats, driving in three. Daniel delivered one RBI and stole two bases while reaching base twice in four plate appearances.
Isabela Cornell played a pivotal role for MSU, pitching 5 1/3 innings with six hits and three earned runs while striking out four batters, earning the win in the process.
Shyanne Florence, also from the Mustangs, struggled in her 1 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and six runs, though only two were earned, with two strikeouts and two wild pitches. For the Hawks, Riley Braden pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up 10 hits and nine runs, six of which were earned, but impressively struck out 11 and issued two walks. Madeline McCall made a brief appearance for RU, conceding a home run in just 1/3 inning, taking the loss.
In their next game, the Mustangs will face Maryville on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. in Mansfield, Texas.
