LAWTON, Okla. – Midwestern State is on the road Thursday and will renew the Red River Rivalry as it faces Cameron at Aggie Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs return to D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday for their second meeting of the season with Oklahoma Christian. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
Midwestern State (5-11, 3-6) is seeking its first road win of the year following an 84-60 loss to Dallas Baptist at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton last week.
Orlando Horton, Jr. was 5 of 10 from the field and scored a team-leading 15 points for the Mustangs, who had three players in double figures.
Jonathan Jackson hit three 3-pointers on his way to 13 points, and
Davyon Butler finished with 11 points.
Tehshaundre Cole led the team with 11 rebounds, including five of the Mustangs' six offensive rebounds. MSU had 27 turnovers that led to 37 points for the Patriots.
Horton has scored double figures in each of his last six games and is the leading scorer for MSU with 11.1 points per game. The junior from Houston also leads the team in assists with 3.1 helpers per game. Horton is 51 of 59 (86.4%) from the free-throw line and has made 27 consecutive free throws, including two game-winning free throws against West Texas A&M on Jan. 17. Horton has the second-best free-throw percentage in the LSC.
Jackson is scoring 11 points per game and is leading the LSC in 3-point shooting accuracy, hitting 44.3 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. The fifth-year senior from Sachse, Texas, is second in the conference with 2.7 3-pointers per game.
Terrance Ramirez and
Davyon Butler are averaging 10 points apiece for the Mustangs, and
Charles McClennahan, Jr. is scoring 9.6 points per outing.
Midwestern State is scoring 75.1 points per game and allowing the opposition to score more than 80 points per outing. The Mustangs shoot 43.8 percent from the field and hold their foes to 45.7 percent shooting.
The Mustangs are only converting 66.4 percent of their free throws, and they are ninth in the league with 21.2 free throws per game.
Midwestern State is fifth in the LSC with 36.7 rebounds per game and seventh in the conference with 11.4 offensive boards per contest. McClennahan is the leading rebounder for MSU with 5.3 boards per game, and Cole is pulling down five rebounds per game. Jackson and
DaCannon Wesley are both grabbing four rebounds an outing.
The Mustangs are getting 33.4 points per game off the bench, which is the second most in the LSC and 18th among NCAA Division II programs.
Only Eastern New Mexico is scoring more fastbreak points than MSU in the LSC. The Mustangs are getting 14.8 fastbreak points per game. The Greyhounds are eighth in the nation with 18.8 fastbreak points per contest.
CAMERON (6-12, 3-7)
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Aggies, 57-32, but is 20-24 when visiting their neighbors to the north. Midwestern State won seven of the last 10 meetings, including a 98-66 thrashing of the Aggies last season at D.L. Ligon Coliseum as the Mustangs hit 14-of-27 shots from beyond the arc and had six players score in double figures, including
Jonathan Jackson, who was 4-of-6 from long range and finished with 16 points in the victory.
The Mustangs lost their last visit to Aggie Gym, 64-58, in the 2023-24 season finale, ending a five-game winning streak as the visitor in the series.
Cameron has a four-game losing streak following a 74-62 loss to St. Edward's, and the Aggies are 3-4 at home this season.
Cameron is conceding 84.9 points per game, which is 15th in the LSC, but the Aggies are the seventh-highest scoring team in the conference with 78.1 points per game.
Michael Jones is scoring 16 points per game, and Jordan Mitchell adds 15.6 points per game to lead the attack for the Aggies, who shoot 45.6 from the field, including 35 percent from 3-point range, which is fourth-best in the league.
Opponents shoot 47.7 percent and hit 31.7 percent of their shots from beyond the arc.
Mitchell is third in the conference with 4.2 assists per game. Jones is second in the conference with a field goal percentage of 62.1, while Mitchell is hitting 43.9 percent of his shots from the field.
Arzhonte Dallas, who is scoring 12.7 points per game, is hitting 32.4 percent of his shots from long distance, and he has taken the sixth-most 3-pointers in the LSC with 108 attempts. He has made 35 of his 3-point shots and is scoring more than two 3-pointers per game for the Aggies.
Thomas Tingle, who is scoring 10.2 points per game, is Cameron's leading rebounder with 6.3 boards per game, which is ninth in the LSC. The Aggies are 14th in the league with 32.4 rebounds per game and 15th in the conference with 8.1 offensive rebounds per outing.
OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN (7-11, 3-8)
Oklahoma Christian overcame a six-point halftime deficit and defeated the Mustangs at Payne Athletic Center last month, 83-75. Jason Clark scored 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting and was one of four Eagles with at least 14 points in the victory. Ma'Syn Howell poured in 17 points. Carson Jones added 16, and Miles Gibson finished with 14 points and a team-leading eight rebounds for the Eagles.
Jordan Reed and Butler each scored 16 points for MSU, which led by as many as eight points in the first half. McClennahan and Horton each scored 12 points in the loss as the Mustangs were outrebounded, 33-24, in a game that saw 10 ties and 13 lead changes.
Midwestern State leads the all-time series with OC, 28-17, and won the last meeting at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 90-58, as Jackson and
Vojin Mastilovic each scored nine points. The Mustangs hit 14-of-29 shots from beyond the arc and shot 47.1 percent from the field, improving its home record in the series to 16-4.
Oklahoma Christian is coming off a 72-68 loss to St. Mary's last week at Payne Athletic Center. The Eagles finished 6-of-23 from 3-point range (26.1%), missing all 12 attempts from beyond the arc in the second half.
Elijah Bailey tied his season high with 20 points on 8-of-14 (57.1 %) shooting, followed by Carson Jones with 18 points, three assists and three steals.
The Eagles, who are 2-5 on the road this season, average 72.2 points per game while holding the opposition to 71.2 points per game.
Oklahoma Christian shoots 44 percent from the field, and its opponents also shoot 44 percent. OC shoots 29.9 percent from beyond the arc, and its opponents shoot 29.9 percent.
Gibson is the leading scorer for OC with 14.7 points per game, and he leads the team with 6.6 rebounds per contest. Jones is scoring 14.4 points per game, while Clark pitches in 13.1 points and Bailey adds 11.7 points per game.
Bailey is dishing out 2.8 assists per game for the Eagles, who are 15th in the LSC with 10.9 assists per game.
Oklahoma Christian shoots 74.1 percent from the foul line, which is fourth-best in the LSC. The Eagles are also fourth in free throws made per game (17.1) and free throws attempted per game (23.1).
The Eagles are 13th in rebounding with 32.6 boards per game, and their minus-1.8 rebounding margin is 12th in the LSC.
Midwestern State begins a three-game road swing with a game at Lubbock Christian on Feb. 3. Tipoff at Rip Griffin Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
