DENTON, Texas — Midwestern State fell to DBU 84-60 on Thursday night at the Kitty Magee Arena. Midwestern State (5-11, 3-6 Lone Star) managed 26 points in the paint but was unable to overcome 27 turnovers against DBU (15-5, 9-1 Lone Star). The Mustangs did, however, record a season high of 10 steals in the game, showcasing their defensive effort.
The game opened with Trevor Frank hitting a 3-pointer for DBU, assisted by Xavion Brown, barely 17 seconds into the contest. Midwestern State quickly responded with a 3-pointer from
Jordan Reed, assisted by
Jonathan Jackson at 19:05. The Patriots capitalized on turnovers and built an early lead, with fast-break points from Jaden Shelvin and Justin Haire. Despite Jackson's success from beyond the arc, scoring three 3-pointers in the half, DBU's offense was relentless, with Drew Calderon and Frank contributing from long range. The first half ended with the Patriots leading 43-30, bolstered by points off turnovers and fast breaks.
DBU extended their lead early in the second half, with Brown scoring a fast-break layup at the 19:48 mark. Jackson responded for the Mustangs with a 3-pointer, narrowing the deficit to 45-33. However, DBU quickly regained momentum with Calderon's layup followed by Frank's 3-pointer, taking the score to 52-33.
Orlando Horton, Jr. provided a spark for MSU, tallying 10 points in the half, including a 3-pointer with 10:25 remaining, but the Patriots' consistent scoring maintained their advantage. The home team closed the half with a balanced attack, securing a 41-30 edge in the half and an 84-60 victory.
Horton Jr. led Maroon & Gold with 15 points and added three assists. Jackson contributed 13 points, hitting three 3-pointers.
Tehshaundre Cole was a force on the boards, collecting a season-high total of 11 rebounds and blocking two shots.
Davyon Butler chipped in with 11 points and recorded two steals.
Brown led the team with eight assists and recorded five steals, contributing nine points on 3-of-4 shooting. Calderon added 11 points, making three 3-pointers and pulling down six rebounds. Frank scored a team-high 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and went 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Jackson McCabe contributed two blocks while scoring six points and grabbing three rebounds. Haire delivered a strong performance with 11 points and nine rebounds, alongside three steals.
In their next game, the Mustangs will face Cameron on Thursday, Jan. 29. The matchup will tip off at 7:30 p.m. at Aggie Gym in Lawton, Oklahoma.
