GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Midwestern St. (1-0-1, 0-0-0) secured a 1-0 victory over Westminster (UT) (1-1-0, 0-0-0) on Sunday, with the decisive goal coming in the second half at Community Hospital Unity Field.
The first half was a tactical battle with both teams searching for an opening. Midwestern State's
Jake Morris made a crucial save in the 9th minute, turning away a shot from Westminster's Cole Williams to keep the game level. The Mustangs kept the pressure on with consistent offensive efforts, highlighted by shots from
Skyler Krchnak and
Cooper Tea early in the half, but the score remained tied at 0-0 heading into halftime.
The second half kicked off with a decisive moment in the 64th minute when
Parker Plaxco found the back of the net for the Mustangs, assisted by
Jaime Villagomez, putting the Mustangs ahead. Despite multiple fouls and a yellow card for
Cristopher Guevara, the defensive efforts, including a key save by goalkeeper Morris in the 74th minute, helped maintain the lead. Midwestern State secured a 1-0 victory, capitalizing on their set pieces and holding the Griffins scoreless throughout the half.
Midwestern State hosts Newman on Thursday night for its home opener at Stang Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 6p.m.
