Mustangs host Newman in home opener at Stang Park

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Newman makes its 10th appearance in Wichita Falls on Thursday night as Midwestern State plays its home opener at Stang Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Mustangs come home after starting the season 1-0-1 with a 1-0 victory over Westminster following a 1-1 draw with Colorado Mesa at Community Hospital Unity Field in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Davis Mays scored in the sixth minute, but an own goal in the 58th minute allowed Colorado Mesa to earn a 1-1 draw with the Mustangs in the season opener.

Two days later, Parker Plaxco scored in the 64th minute — assisted by Jaime Villagomez — and Midwestern State defeated the Griffins, 1-0.

Midwestern State is 15-1-0 in its all-time series with the Jets, who have not appeared at Stang Park since a 3-1 loss to the Stangs in 2018.

Midwestern State has won its last seven meetings with the Jets and is 9-0-0 when the schools meet at Stang Park, outscoring Newman in Wichita Falls 32-3.

Newman is 2-1-0 to start the season. The Jets lost their season opener at home to West Texas A&M, 1-0, as Venancio Calderon scored in the 52nd minute for the Buffaloes.

The Jets held on for a 3-2 victory over Oklahoma Christian as Gabriel Juliani scored a hat trick for Newman, which conceded goals in the 58th and 68th minutes.

Before departing for Wichita Falls, the Jets defeated William Jewell, 4-1, as four different players scored goals and Francisco Pinochet made five saves for the Jets.

Pinochet, who is 1-1-0 in his two starts for Newman, has made seven saves with a 1.00 goals-against average and a save percentage of .778. Santiago Rea Montano has a 2.00 goals-against average with nine saves and a save percentage of .818.

Midwestern State returns to Stang Park on Saturday evening for a match with Northeastern State that kicks off at 5:30 p.m.
