Midwestern State taps Luis Diaz to lead tennis program

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State University has named former standout student-athlete Luis Diaz as head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs, Director of Athletics Kyle Williams announced Wednesday.

Diaz, a 2024 graduate of MSU and one of the most decorated players in recent program history, becomes the 12th head coach in MSU tennis history.

A native of Madrid, Spain, Diaz helped lead the Mustangs to back-to-back NCAA Division II postseason appearances in 2023 and 2024. In his final season, he earned ITA All-America honors in doubles, was named ITA Senior Player of the Year, and captured both Lone Star Conference Senior of the Year and First Team All-LSC honors in singles and doubles.

"Luis embodies the values of MSU Athletics," Williams said. "His experience as a player, leadership qualities, and commitment to excellence made him a clear choice to lead our tennis programs into the future."

Diaz previously competed for St. Edward's University, contributing to NCAA postseason appearances in 2018 and 2019 before transferring to MSU. He graduated in 2024 with a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in analytics.

Off the court, Diaz earned CSC Academic All-District recognition and was a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete, reflecting his commitment to academic success.

His coaching background includes developing junior talent at the Midlothian Tennis Association, Tompkins Tennis Academy in San Francisco, and the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy in Spain.

Diaz is set to begin his new role immediately, with preparations underway for the upcoming 2025–26 season.
