Vacula, Slocombe earn special LSC postseason honors

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Filip Vacula was named Freshman of the Year in the Lone Star Conference and was one of six players named First Team Singles in the LSC. Stephen Slocombe was named Senior of the Year and was Co-Sportsmanship Player of the Year along with Jonathan Vega of UT Permian Basin. The awards were presented on Wednesday night at the LSC Tennis Championship Awards Reception.

Slocombe and Vacula earned First Team Doubles recognition, and Slocombe was also selected for Second Team Singles.

Sophomore Bruno Sanchez earned Honorable Mention Singles, and was also named Honorable Mention Doubles alongside his partner Justin Van Amerongen.

Vacula, No. 18 in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, made quite an impression in his freshman campaign with the Mustangs. The Czech played 16 matches at No. 1 singles and won six of nine matches against ranked opponents. Vacula finished the regular season with a 10-6 record at No. 1 singles.

In doubles, Vacula and Slocombe won six of seven matches against LSC opponents en route to an 11-5 record overall. The duo has won eight of its last nine matches and has a four-match winning streak entering the LSC 2025 Men's Tennis Championship. Vacula and Slocombe are the No. 12 pairing in the latest ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

Slocombe enjoyed a 10-match winning streak in singles during the regular season and finished the conference campaign with a 6-1 record. Slocombe, a member of the Davis Cup team in Barbados, finished the regular season with an 11-4 record, playing primarily in the No. 3 position for Midwestern State.

Sanchez has won eight of his last 10 singles matches, and the Spaniard finished the regular season with a 12-6 record. He won his only appearance at No. 1 singles in a 7-0 win over UT Dallas on March 13, and was 11-6 at No. 2 singles. Sanchez is ranked No. 29 among NCAA Division II players.

Sanchez and Van Amerongen are 6-2 in conference duals and have won seven of their last 10 doubles matches. The duo finished the regular season with an 11-5 overall record and played primarily at No. 2 doubles for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State, the No. 4 seed, plays a quarterfinal match against fifth-seeded Cameron in the 2025 LSC Men's Tennis Championship at Arlington Tennis Center on Thursday at 9 a.m. The winner meets top-seeded UT Tyler in the semifinals on Friday morning.
