Giraldo wins 10th straight, clinches 14th consecutive win for Stang Gang

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- – No. 3-ranked Midwestern State earned its 14th consecutive victory, improved its conference record to 9-0 and remained undefeated in seven home duals by snatching a 5-2 victory over No. 38-ranked Dallas Baptist on Friday afternoon at MSU Tennis Center.

Midwestern State, which has clinched at least a share of the LSC regular season title, is 20-1 overall with one more regular season dual match to play. The Mustangs host St. Mary's on April 26. T

Sophomore Sofia Giraldo, No. 22 in the saw her 18-set winning streak come to an end, but after dropping the first set to Isabella Rios at No. 4 singles, the Colombian roared to a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph. Giraldo's win clinched the dual match victory for the Mustangs. Giraldo extended her winning streak to 10 matches and improved to 15-5 for the season. Giraldo is 9-0 against conference opponents in the No. 4 position.

Midwestern State won the doubles' point for the 10th time in its last 11 duals. The Mustangs won all three doubles matches.

Sarah Mazaraki and Sydney Williams returned to form at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 win over Andrea Delgado and Isabella Quintero. Williams and Mazaraki saw a nine-match winning streak snapped against UT Tyler on Thursday but improved to 14-3 for the season, setting the tone for the day with a resounding win over the DBU Patriots.

Camila Garcia and Hannah Yip, ranked No. 40 in doubles, clinched the first point of the dual with a 6-4 victory over Emily Buchanan and Jenna Payne. Garcia and Yip celebrated a fourth consecutive win and improved to 8-1 against LSC foes. The duo is 10-2 in the No. 2 position and 12-5 overall this spring.

No. 15-ranked Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga were tested by the DBU duo of Rios and Madalyn Smelley at No. 1 doubles, but the Romanians won a tight set, 7-6 (6). Binzari and Ghinga are 13-6 this season with four losses coming against nationally ranked opponents.

Dallas Baptist pulled even with the Mustangs as Emily Buchanan upended Camila Garcia at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2. The tall freshman from Colombia had a four-match winning streak stopped, and she fell to 5-2 in conference play. Garcia is 10-4 in the No. 5 spot.

Anda Ghinga and Hannah Yip both posted straight-set victories as Midwestern established a 3-1 lead in the dual match.

Ghinga has won 11 consecutive matches and is 9-0 in conference play after dismantling Leonie Schondelmaier at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2 for her 67th career singles victory. Ghinga is 17-2 this season and has not dropped a match since suffering a 6-7, 2-6 loss to Guadalupe Martinez of West Florida on March 1.

Yip has a four-match winning streak and is 7-2 in the Lone Star Conference after a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Madalyn Smelley at No. 2 singles. Yip has won seven of her nine matches during the conference campaign and improved to 12-4 at No. 2 singles.

No. 4-ranked Jessica Binzari won a rollercoaster match against Katherine Robinson at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, and improved to 14-4 overall with a 12-3 record at No. 1 singles.

Sydney Williams saw a seven-match winning streak end with a 6-7 (2), 2-6 defeat at the hands of Andrea Delgado at No. 6 singles. Williams is 4-1 in conference matches with an 8-3 record overall for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State is 14-3 all-time against the DBU Patriots and has won eight of the nine encounters at MSU Tennis Center.
