Anda Ghinga matched a school record for career victories in singles, No. 3-ranked Midwestern State did not concede a single game in its first Lone Star Conference clash with Sul Ross State. The Mustangs won every set 6-0 en route to an 11th straight dual-match victory on Friday.
The Lobos defaulted No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. The Mustangs proved to be far superior in every other position and posted a 7-0 win.
Midwestern State improved to 17-1 overall and remains undefeated in the conference with a 6-0 record.
Ghinga tied the Midwestern State school record for most career singles victories with her 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Brianna Cruz at No. 3 singles. The senior from Romania is 64-21 in singles matches during her career at MSU and tied Lacey Wuthrich's school record. Ghinga has a seven-match winning streak and is 14-2 this season.
Jessica Binzari, who is No. 7 in the ITA singles national rankings, coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Malia Williams-Sala. The senior improved to 12-3 this season and is 10-2 in the No. 1 position.
Hannah Yip breezed past Priscilla Delgado, 6-0, 6-0, and improved to 11-6 for the season. Yip is 4-2 against conference foes and 9-4 at No. 2 singles this season.
Sofia Giraldo has now won seven consecutive matches in straight sets. The streak began with a double-bagel win against Arkansas-Fort Smith and continued with a 6-0, 6-0 rout of Nayr Moreno at Sul Ross State. Giraldo is 6-0 at No. 4 singles for the Mustangs.
Camila Garcia has won five of her last six singles matches for the Mustangs after dismantling Emma Gonzalez at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Garcia and Yip defeated Cruz and Gonzalez at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, while Ghinga and Binzari overwhelmed Moreno and Williams-Sala at No. 1 doubles, 6-0.
Midwestern State visits Western New Mexico for a dual match on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
