Ghinga wins 65th career singles match in 7-0 victory at Western New Mexico

SILVER CITY, N.M. -- – Senior Anda Ghinga set the Midwestern State school record for most singles victory in a career, and the No. 3-ranked Mustangs defeated Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon, 7-0.

Ghinga improved her career record to 65-21 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Caini Wang at No. 3 singles and surpassed Lacey Wuthrich for the most singles' wins at Midwestern State. The Romanian has won nine consecutive matches and is 15-2 this season. Ghinga is 7-0 in the No. 3 position for the Mustangs.

Ghinga was the first player off the court as Midwestern State improved to 18-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play. The Mustangs have won 12 consecutive dual matches.

Ghinga and Jessica Binzari, No. 14 in the ITA doubles rankings, started the day on the WNMU Tennis Courts with a 6-3 win over Wang and An Montero-Villegas at No. 1 doubles. Camila Garcia and Hannah Yip, the No. 49-ranked duo, also posted a 6-3 victory over Andreea Arnautu and Lucia Carmena. The Western Mustangs defaulted No. 3 doubles.

Western New Mexico also defaulted two singles matches.

Yip defeated Montero-Villegas, 6-3, 6-2, and improved to 10-4 at No. 2 singles. The senior from Malaysia is 12-6 overall this season and has won seven of her last 10 singles matches.

No. 7-ranked Jessica Binzari picked up her 13th singles win of the season with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Andreea Arnautu.

Sofia Giraldo, ranked No. 21 among NCAA Division II singles players, cruised to another victory at No. 4 singles. The Colombian won her eighth straight match, 6-1, 6-0, over Lucia Carmena. Giraldo has won 16 consecutive sets and has only lost 28 games since the streak started against Arkansas-Fort Smith on March 9.

The Mustangs have swept three of their last four opponents in the LSC and did not lose a set on the road trip after posting a 7-0 win at Sul Ross State on Friday.

Midwestern State hosts UT Tyler at MSU Tennis Center on Thursday. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
