No. 9-ranked Mustangs win home opener over Northwest Missouri State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 9-ranked Midwestern State defeated Northwest Missouri State in its home opener at MSU Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, 5-2, and improved its season record to 5-2.

No. 18-ranked Filip Vacula won the marquee match of the day with a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory over No. 39-ranked Dominik Wijntjes at No. 1 singles. The Mustangs clinched the dual-match with victories in four singles matches before Vacula recorded his fourth win over a nationally-ranked opponent and improved his record in singles to 4-3 for the season.

Vacula and Stephen Slocombe, ranked No. 37 in doubles, posted a 6-1 victory over Hugo Alvarez and Luc Mascitti, but the Mustangs dropped the other two doubles matches and began singles play facing a 1-0 deficit.

No. 46-ranked Bruno Sanchez cruised past Rafal Bednarczuk at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1, to pull the Stang Gang even with the Bearcats.

Slocombe faced Mascitti again in singles, and the Barbadian breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 position.

Philip Kamara improved to 2-0 at No. 4 singles as he pulled out a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory over Vinicius Rodrigues.

Killian Guillou clinched the dual match for Midwestern State with a routine 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Hugo Alvarez.

Antonin Leborne upset No. 28-ranked Juan David Duque at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Midwestern State returns to MSU Tennis Center on Saturday for a dual with Newman. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
