Midwestern State meets Buffaloes in quarterfinals of LSC Men’s Basketball Championship

FRISCO, Texas -- No. 25-ranked Midwestern State is the No. 3 seed in the 2025 Lone Star Conference Men's Basketball Championship and faces No. 6-seed West Texas A&M for the third time this season in the quarterfinals of the postseason tournament. Tipoff at Comerica Center on Friday is scheduled for noon.

Midwestern State enjoyed its first 20-win season since the 2015-16 campaign. The Mustangs finished the regular season with a 22-6 record and went 17-5 in conference play.

Midwestern State closed out the regular season by winning 11 of its final 13 games and had an eight-game winning streak snapped with a 74-57 loss at Lubbock Christian in the regular season finale on Saturday.

This week, the Mustangs made their first appearance in the NABC Division II Coaches Poll since being ranked No. 20 in the 2016 preseason poll. Midwestern State had been receiving votes since Dec. 3.

The Mustangs won both regular season meetings with the Buffaloes, including a 63-58 victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Feb. 1.

Will Shepherd closed out the game by nailing a 3-pointer, blocking a shot and hitting two free throws in the final minute. Shepherd broke a 56-56 tie with a 3-pointer from the right corner with 51 seconds remaining and denied Narit Chotikavanic a drive to the basket with 11 seconds remaining before icing the victory with a pair of free throws.

Mason Gibson was the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 18 points, and Pierre Sanders finished with 12 to lead the Mustangs offensive attack. Gibson also led the team with three steals, and Sanders finished with two takeaways.

Reggie Hill matched a career high with 14 rebounds and had two steals for the Mustangs, who finished with nine steals and forced 12 turnovers.

Midwestern State's defense held West Texas A&M to only 17.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc (6-of-35) and 32.2 percent from the field (19-of-59).

The victory enabled the Mustangs to sweep the regular season series for the first time in nine seasons.

When the two teams clashed in Canyon on Jan. 3, Sanders hit a pair of tough baskets in the final minute to lead Midwestern State to a 70-69 win. West Texas A&M jumped out to a 20-7 lead at the 12:20 mark of the first half and took an eight-point lead into halftime.

Sanders scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the second half, including eight points over the last 2 1/2 minutes.

The Hutto, Texas, native buried a triple from straight away to knot the game at 63-63 with 2:35 to go, then pushed the Mustangs in front with a driving layup with 48 seconds remaining.

West Texas A&M's Nicholas Jett answered with a 3-pointer from the right wing to give the Buffs a 69-68 edge just eight seconds later.

Sanders added the game winner on his patented turnaround-around jumper with 10 seconds remaining, then made a steal on a crucial in-bound pass with four seconds left to seal the victory.

Midwestern State claimed its first win in Canyon since a 74-65 victory on January 6, 2016, and the Mustangs snapped a seven-game slide at First United Bank Center.

The Buffaloes were ranked No. 13 in the nation at the time, and the victory was MSU's first road win against a team ranked in the NABC Top 25 since taking down No. 10-ranked Tarleton State, 78-76, on January 14, 2015.

Sanders, Gibson and Shepherd received LSC postseason honors.
