WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 15-ranked Midwestern State has won six consecutive duals and boasts a 9-2 overall record as it travels to No. 5-ranked Lubbock Christian and UT Permian Basin for dual matches this weekend. The Mustangs visit LCU at Penny Gullo Tennis Center for a 2 p.m. dual match on Friday and face the Falcons in Odessa on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Mustangs opened conference play with a 4-3 victory over Cameron as Jose Marquez clinched the victory with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 triumph at No. 5 singles.
Midwestern State is 39-23 in singles matches this season, led by freshman Filip Vacula in the No. 1 position.
Vacula, ranked No. 11 in the ITA national singles rankings, is 6-3 in dual matches with four consecutive victories. The native of the Czech Republic is 5-1 against nationally ranked opponents this season.
Sophomore Bruno Sanchez of Spain is ranked No. 32, and junior Juan David Duque of Colombia is no. 34 in the latest ITA singles rankings.
Sanchez had a five-match winning streak snapped with a 5-7, 6-7 (4) loss to No. 39-ranked Noe Millard of Cameron last week.
Duque is 5-2 with three wins at No. 6 singles and two victories at No. 5 singles for the Mustangs.
Vacula and senior Stephen Slocombe of Barbados are the No. 19-ranked doubles pairing in the ITA national rankings and have won their last four matches, improving to 6-4 this spring.
Midwestern State is 16-15 in doubles matches. Sanchez and Justin Van Amerongen are 5-3 at No. 2 doubles this season.
Midwestern State is 6-0 all-time against Lubbock Christian, including two wins last season. The Mustangs defeated the Chaparrals in the regular season at MSU Tennis Center, 5-2, and they handed LCU a 4-3 loss in the LSC Men's Tennis Championship semifinals.
Lubbock Christian has won its last 12 duals and is 13-1 this season. The Chaparrals are hosting the Mustangs in their conference opener.
Kelly Giese is ranked No. 17 in singles, and Pablo Segura is ranked No. 18 in the latest ITA rankings.
Giese has won his last five singles matches and is 9-5 for the Chaparrals this spring. Segura is 13-2 this spring and is coming off a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Andrew Suver of Point Loma Nazarene.
Matthew Ghedin and Marco Seccia are ranked No. 30 in doubles for Lubbock Christian. The duo had an eight-match winning streak snapped with a 6-1 loss to Niclas Goltz and Nabeel Khan of Point Loma Nazarene last week.
Midwestern State is 13-1 all-time against UTPB but lost their last meeting, 4-3, in the South Central Regional last year.
UTPB is 5-4 this season and opens conference play on Friday against Cameron, and that will be the Falcons home opener.
The Mustangs travel to Sul Ross State for their next dual match on April 11 at noon, and they will be at Western New Mexico on April 12.
