No. 11 Mustangs sweep Comets for fifth-straight win

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 11-ranked Midwestern State rolled to its third-straight sweep, taking down UT Dallas, 7-0, Thursday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs improved to 8-2 by extending their overall win straight to five consecutive matches, while the Comets fell to 2-5.

Senior Stephen Slocombe and Filip Vacula, the No. 31-ranked doubles team in NCAA Division II, started the momentum with a 6-1 win over UT Dallas' Benjamin DuBois and Travis Rafferty at the No. 1 line.

The Mustangs claimed the doubles point with successive victories at Nos. 2 and 3.

Juan David Duque and Killian Guillou came off of the courts first with a 6-2 win over Harshom Gupta and Shehin Yerragudi at No. 3 before Bruno Sanchez and Justin Van Amerongen teamed up for a 6-1 victory over Girithanan Dee and Edward Shteyn at No. 2.

The Mustangs rolled to straight-set wins in each of the singles matchups.

Junior Jose Marquez gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Shteyn at No. 4 before Van Amerongen beat Gupta 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.

No. 31-ranked Juan David Duque delivered the clincher for the Mustangs by taking down Matheus Zanellato 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. Duque improved to 5-1 during the dual season.

No. 24-ranked Bruno Sanchez claimed his first win at No. 1 singles this season by beating Rafferty 6-2, 6-1. Sanchez pushed his personal winning streak to five matches.

Senior Stephen Slocombe rolled to his fourth consecutive victory with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Yerragudi at No. 2, while Philip Kamara claimed his fifth-straight win with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over DuBois at No. 3.

Midwestern State opens Lone Star Conference play Tuesday afternoon against Cameron. First serve at the MSU Tennis Center is slated for 2 p.m.
