WICHITA FALLS, Texas-- No. 11-ranked Midwestern State held edged Cameron 4-3 for its sixth-straight win in its Lone Star Conference opener Tuesday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Mustangs improved to 9-2 on the season and stayed perfect at home at 5-0.
MSU's 31st-ranked doubles team of
Stephen Slocombe and
Filip Vacula combined for a 6-3 win over Cameron's Kristian Kubik and Lachlan Sitina at the No. 1 position to clinch the doubles point after the teams split the first two matches coming off of the courts.
Bruno Sanchez and
Justin Van Amerongen made quick work at No. 2 doubles with a 6-1 win over Rhys Edwards and Pavel Kelo, then Cameron retaliated at No. 3 with Noe Milliard and Vincente Preto outlasting
Juan David Duque and
Killian Guillou, 6-3.
The Aggies leveled the match a 3-3 when Kubik defeated Duque 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
But that was after Midwestern put the Aggies on the brink on the strength of Slocombe's 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 3 followed by No. 12-ranked Vacula's 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-2 victory of 32nd-ranked Louis Boilevin at No. 1.
MSU junior
Jose Marquez delivered the clincher with the final match off of the courts, taking down Edwards 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 5.
The Mustangs play host to Cowley College (Kan.) in a scrimmage Thursday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
