TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 19 Midwestern lost four different sets in a tiebreak at Washburn on Saturday afternoon and were swept by the No. 8-ranked Ichabods, 7-0.
Stephen Slocombe and Filip Vacula of Midwestern State lost a tiebreak set to the top-ranked pairing in NCAA Division II. Tim Hammes and Matthew Earle narrowly defeated the Mustangs' duo at No. 1 doubles, winning an extended tiebreak, 8-6, clinching the first point of the dual match.
Washburn's Tommaso Cecchetti and Vaclan Schneider, ranked No. 11 in doubles, defeated Killian Guillou and Germano Setti at No. 2 doubles, 6-3.
Bruno Sanchez and Justin Van Amerongen won a tiebreak set for Midwestern State at No. 3 doubles, 7-3, over Pavlos Parson and Zinovi Nahirniak of Washburn, but the doubles point was decided by the outcome of the match at No. 1 doubles.
Schneider, ranked No. 15 in singles, defeated No. 16-ranked Sanchez at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 7-5, as the Ichabods took a 2-0 lead at home.
Hammes, the No. 5-ranked player in Division II singles, extended the lead with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Vacula at No. 1 singles.
No. 33-ranked Parson clinched the dual match with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Setti at No. 3 singles.
Guillou lost in straight sets as Matthew Earle took the point at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Jose Marquez split sets with Cecchetti at No. 5 singles, but the Ichabod won the third-set match-tiebreak in a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 conquest.
Van Amerongen nearly salvaged a point for the Mustangs at No. 6 singles, but Nahirniak prevailed in a third-set match-tiebreak, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7.
Midwestern State has a scrimmage scheduled with Cowley College for Tuesday. First serve at Mustang Tennis Center is slated for 2 p.m.
