NORTH KANSAS CITY, Missouri -- No. 5-ranked Midwestern State displayed its prowess in the opening dual match of the 2025 season with a 6-1 triumph over Rockhurst at the Northland Racquet Club on Friday.
The Mustangs won five singles matches in straight sets and swept the three doubles matches en route to a 1-0 start to the season.
Freshman Camila Garcia made her Midwestern State debut and was the first singles player off the court, winning her match at No. 5 singles over Daniela Lentisco, 6-2, 6-2.
No. 6-ranked Jessica Binzari breezed past Sofia Valdespino at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4, while No. 8-ranked Sofia Giraldo dismissed Zuzanna Szmyd, 6-3, 6-0.
Anda Ghinga posted a routine 6-3, 6-3 victory over Marina Magai at No. 4 singles, and freshman Alessia Dolce — in her maiden voyage with the Mustangs — defeated Maria Baez at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
Hannah Yip was narrowly defeated at No. 1 singles after taking the first set from No. 44-ranked Eleanor Coleman, 6-1, Yip lost a second-set tiebreak and fell in the match tiebreak, 13-11.
Yip and Garcia set the tone with a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles over Coleman and Szmyd.
Ghinga and Sydney Williams clinched the first point of the day with a 6-4 triumph over Lentisco and Magai.
Binzari was paired with MSU newcomer Hattie Berend at No. 3 doubles and the duo outlasted Baez and Baldespino, 7-5, to complete a doubles sweep.
The Mustangs are in Topeka on Saturday for a stern test against No. 11-ranked Washburn. The dual match begins at noon.
